Try taking out the VGT solenoid spray it good with carb cleaner and put it back in.
Sounds like my issue, it was the VGT and cleaning it got me home.

the carb cleaner wont fix the vgt, but I noticed a difference right away. I took my truck out today and the same issue. Chugging and a whole lot of black smoke. I found a guy on e-bay selling good used ones for $35
I bought one so we will see how it goes on my truck.

The k/N filter will let dust in and mess up the turbp vanes....STOCK Air filter was the best. The Edge tuner has been know to really mess up the Tranny too. A tuner that can be tuned via custom tunes would be far better choice.

Ford Turbo Powerstroke 6.0 Turbocharger VGT solenoid - eBay (item 200568998349 end time Jan-29-11 14:35:26 PST)
The guy has sold quite a few with only one negative about them.
I will post on this thread how it works
kev78,
did you try cleaning the solenoid?
I didn't get any crank or cam codes with mine but I got MAP sensors, and 2 codes relating to the EBT
after I swapped out my buddies good solenoid no codes came back.
What kind of milage are we talking?
Turbo ever been cleaned or inspected?
Have you checked the FICM?

Forgot to ask.
what are you using to check and clear the codes?
the Edge?
If the edge, in my experience, the cam sensor code came up on my truck frequently.
I was actually stranded with the edge had it towed to a ford dealer and the edge said cam sensor. after the dealer looked for about an hour he found the edge malfunctioned,
removed the edge and the truck was fine.
Got a new replacement edge and sold it.

hard starting and roug run

Does the problem stop after the truck is warmed up?

Does it smoke black after start up and possiblly white as you take off for the first few minutes?

Does plugging truck in change any of the problems

no problem doesnt get any better with temp, pluggin in seems to help it start, but smoke is black and whitish. but it wil not clear out rpms dont go over 2000, once it hits that speed its all over the place on the tach and smokes to beat the band.
