I have an 04 ranger 4 cyl. Will not run. Starts up sometimes but when I give it gas it shuts down. Sputtering and not running to good if it does go. Replaced fuel pump. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks mike.
With out the codes it is a little tough. I think and oreilly or autozone will allow you to check out a scanner for a desposit that you get back when you return it. You can check for fuel at the injector rail and check for fire at the plugs. if you have fuel but no fire or intermitten fire then I would definitley get it scanned some how. To many expensive sensors to guess which one. Primary on my list would be a crank postion sensor.
Yes they will scan for free if he can get it there. It won't run so he either rents a scanner or tows the truck somewhere.
My bad. Guess that would be a problem. Did you try cleaning the MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner? It's located in air intake right after air cleaner housing. Did you try replacing the air filter?
Changed fuel filter. Engine light is on but have not had a way to check codes.
if you have the means buy a cheap scanner. I bought mine a 1.5 years ago at costcos for $20( they dont have them anymore). Also put a rag over the schrader valve and carfully see if you have fuel pressure there. be carful not to get sprayed. getting the codes is VITAL
I use the cheap scanners for quick code reads and clears and they are great but for his model he needs the ones that do CAN codes also. That brings the price up about double of what the cheap scanners run. A non CAN might be able to read some codes but I am reluctant to tell the OP to buy one and have it not work. For my in depth scanning I run a laptop with OBDII software. It will give me real time data. But right now we need to get his ride running.
My codekey has not failed to read a code, Ford, GM, Saab and Toyota. You can get an upgradeable actron for $50. I understand a $250 scanner is best. However if you can't afford it a cheap one will still help a lot and save you time. And if your truck is not running the cheap one is "PRICELESS"
