hi new guy from ill. just got my first f4 and have some questions.
ok well first of all this id my first ford truck picked it up for 500 bucks and it has no motor or trans.it is a 51 f-4 i belive and its a dually.
now i had a few questions for you guys.the body doesnt look to bad and the frame is solid.the floors are kinda bad will need patch work.the flatbed is done for also.
now my plans for it is to make it a work truck and car hauler.and i want to keep the dually.and i will put a modern flatbed on it with a 5th wheel hitch.
the truck used to be a v8 and a stick.
now my plans for the engine would be like a 428 or 460 with a c6 trans out of like a 74-79 250 or 350.
and one more thing i have a 78 ford f350 dually at my huse for a parts truck.will that dually rear end bolt up into the f4.
thanks for the help.

I guess I'll be first to welcome you. What part of the state are you in? You might go into your user id area and post your location in the upper right hand corner of your postings.
Nice starting point for your project. Your truck is the deluxe cab model, called a 5 Star Extra cab. And looks to have no severe rust. The rear of your F-350 will mount ok but you'd have to change spring perches and you'd have a wider track than your stock Timken. Plus you'll have 8 lug x 6.5" bolt pattern on the back with the stock 5 lug x 8" up front. So you'd have to carry two spares. A better swap would be a Dana 70 out of a Dodge based motor home from the 1970s since it would have the same bolt pattern. Plus you'd then want to grab the 19.5" wheels from the motor home to replace your stock two piece "widowmaker" style 18" or 20" tube types. We can go deeper into wheel issues later if you want. If you wanted to change the front to a match your F-350 rear axle you'd have some engineering to do. Guys have done it but it's not simple. A 460/C6 would be a good swap. I've got a similar set up tucked away with a future project in mind. Stu

You will probably have to make some modification with the transmission crossmember and of course fabricate the motor and transmission mounts.
You can leave the front end as is, but really check everything out and make sure it's all tight.
Truckdog62563 mentioned the 'widowmakers' and it is something that you need to look into. Replacing your wheels is a must if you plan on using it as you described. You also will want to do some major brake changes.

Here's a Craigs List ad in Tampa for an axle with wheels. Kinda far, but price is right. Or maybe somebody else closer will want to ****** it up. Stu

Stang3191,
Welcome to the FTE. There are a lot of us here from Illinois.
I would suggest that you listen well to what they are telling you about what works and what doesn't as they have been there and done that. In particular the tires and rims need to go as they can kill you. I hope I made that plain enough...
It looks like you have a solid body to start with so good luck and keep us posted.

Don't have a pic of the Dana 70, but here's a pic of a truck said to have an Eaton from an IHC. IHCs up into the '70s used the same 5 lug pattern on their 1.5 and 2.0 tons. The guy in above CL posting says his axle has a 4.10 gear. As I understand the Eatons had maybe a wider range of ring and pinion options available.
One last warning. Before you start getting heroic with this truck you need to do a few thread searches or Google searches of the term "widowmakers". Maybe also Google the technical term "Firestone RH-5°". Stu
