Stroking a 302
Except for Rage. with 8,000 HP you gets lotsa torque as a byproduct.
Hey RMF, I kind of like the way that sounded. Do we get a consulting fee?
Typically more stroke = more torque. Short stroke = throttle response/very rapid RPM build. Not that I am really answering your question. With the wide availability of cams and cylinder heads, you could make either engine any flavor you want. I know the 351W will make huge torque on a budget. I've seen a zillion magazine build ups on it.
'rage couldn't decide whether he wants torque or HP so he decided to just have 8,000 of each to be safe.
Don't plan on using your 302 heads, unless you're holding out on us that you've already got a set of higher flowing heads. First, 302's use 7/16" head bolts, 351w's are 1/2". If you have the stock size valves and ports, these may be smaller than what you want. Here's a quick list of valve sizes in some common heads, not to mention the ports and, most importantly, flow velocity and capacity:
1.78"intake/1.45"exhaust; 289, early 302
1.78"intake/1.46"exhaust; 302, 75-up 351w
1.84"intake/1.54"exhaust; 69-74 351w
1.94"intake/1.60"exhaust; common aftermarket valve set used in SBF heads
For comparison you should set a pair of Windsor heads next to a set of Clevelands:
2.04"intake/1.654"exhaust; 351c2v, 351m,400
2.19"intake/1.709"exhaust; 351c4v
2.19"intake/1.710"exhaust; Boss 302, Boss 351
Valve sizes are not everything, and these are 30 year old technology, but this should clue you in to the vast differences available. Before you spend a dime reconditioning and porting a set of used heads, get an accurate total estimate and compare it to what you can buy a complete new aftermarket set from Summit, Jegs, etc.
The Carter AFB and Edelbrock Performer Series carbs are identical. Federal Mogul acquired Carter and rights to the AFB. Edelbrock licenced the AFB from Federal Mogul. Magnetti-Marelli manufactures the carbs for both Carter and Edelbrock . The 500cfm and 625cfm models have identically sized primaries. The 750 has much larger primaries. The Performer 351 kit uses the 625cfm. The Performer RPM 351 kit is designed for the 750cfm.
You can sell your 302 complete and recoup some of your money if you don't canabalize it.
The dealbreaker on most cleveland swaps has been a limited selection of headers that will work in a given chassis. Maybe someone here can enlighten us what will work in an effie.
Adios,
Brett
I'm going another route on eng & tran.
Anyway my opionwould be to go 351w nothing else.

I don't have "a boatload of money", but I do work an average of anywhere between 60-100 hours of overtime a month! On good months, it affords me the opportunity to progress on my project truck
For now, I'll focus on the IFS and getting the interior/upholstery/stereo/alarm done. I'll keep the info and responses here for future reference. Thanks to everyone for the input and help...
Daryl
Any way have good day.
