So, Ive been poking around to figure out the legit answer to my question without any luck.
What is it with the cam phasers and this ticking? What is actually ticking? is it the cam phasers themselves? or is it the timing chain? if its the cam phasers themselves, what about the cam phaser is making the ticking noise? are they simply not getting enough oil pressure to advance/retard the time so they are slapping ***** nilly and eventually snap off in the "oil pockets" of the phasers? any info would be helpful.
im a gotta know how it works kinda guy to understand how they actually function, if that makes any sense.
from what i have seen, is after some wear they bounce clockwise then counter clockwise and that is the ticking sound. the more wear/room to bounce the louder it will be. (if i am wrong someone please step in, thanks)
bouncing all the way retarded and then back to advanced? that would imply no oil pressure to the cam phasers at all wouldnt it? doesnt seem like the motor would even run like that.
The top of the motor will run fine without oil pressure... trust me. 4.6L expedition before this. Headgasket leak internally, and ended up with a ticking after 2 weeks of oil changes. Turned out anti freeze was in the oil. Stopped up any oil from getting to the top of the motor... lifters would tick and make an awful noise until the motor warmed up and the oil begin to thin out.

i dont think they are bouncing all the way from max to max but just a small amount (just enough to hear them)
