I just purchased an new set of 32 in BFG MT KM on thursday and today i went wheelin' to test them out. Me and a friend went to our favorite mud hole (living in Arizona, there aren't many of these with mud) and the tires preformed great. I had traction no problem through almost 18 in of mud, but on the last run it just died. Nothing special happened to make it die so we thought that it was just flooded. So being the pantient people that we are we waited 5 min untill we got bored and tried to start it up. It would crank all it wanted and the battery was still good so i popped the distributer cap, dired everything off and tried it again. Still nothing. Well lets just say after about 2 hours of cranking every 15 to 20 min, by batter started to run low and i got a friend to try and jump me, but that did nothing. After going through many 4 wheeler groups with still no insight, i reluctently called the towing company and got it out. It now sits in the closest parking lot to the mud (15 miles away) and im $190 in the hole. I took the battery in for a new one because the old one was dead after a good 5 hours of trying to start it , but the only thing that i could figure from the information given to me by other ford owners that i know would be for me to check the fuel pump inertia switch. does this sound like the problem? or and i going astray. Like i said, it didn'r sputter and then die, it just wen through a rough section and the engine just shut off. Has anyone heard of the inertia switch turring of while they were out romping?
Any info would be greatly appreciated
thanks
if you hit a rough spot and it just died i would think the inertia switch would be possible.it is designed to stop fuel after an impact for safety reasons, you know, like fire and explosions. Its only a button, hell push it!it will either start or it wont.with fuel injection when you turn the key you should hear a lil buzz of the fuel pump,if you dont hear it ,for sure push that button.
ok, you said if you think its the fuel pump, have someone go into the truck and have another person go to the rear of the truck and have them turn the key, if theres no sound youve got a bad fuel pump on your hands, and while your at it you may aswell change the fuel filter. best of luck to you, hope this helps
alright, I looked up the inertiat switch, tired reseting it and still all it does is crank away. But, there is no sound that the fuel pump is on. I just had my pump replaced not 6 months ago, is it possible that i could have damage my pump while 4wheeling or could it just be the electrical system thats damaged
thanks
check the fuel pump relay.when you say there is no fuel pump sound, are you turnig the key to on position(not tryin to start)and listen closely for that few second buzz?
when i was checking for the fuel pump sound, i had a friend turn the key just before the point of starting it, so that all the electrical is on and so should the fuel pump. I sat directly under the fuel tank and listened. there was no soaund and my friend said that he heard nothing in the cab, so we traded places and repeated the process again. But no luck and no sound. I just had my fuel pump replaced 5 months ago so the part is under warranty still. If this sounds like it is a faulty pump please tell me so i can take it back to the shop that installed it for me. If not, than any ideas?
thanks again
all i can tell you is what the book says----------if you turn the key and hear no sound ,check the fuel pump fuse.if the fuse is blown replace it.if the fuse is ok and pump still doesnt run proceed to next step.with ignition off, unplug the fuel pump connector.using a jumper wire, ground the negative terminal of the fuel pump.using a fused jumper wire, apply 12 volts to the other terminal.if pump doesnt run, replce it.if it does run the problem lies somewhere in the electrical circuit to the fuel pump.
regardless of whether the fuel pump "went out" or not,its seems to me that he is saying its NOT working for one reason or another, sputter or no sputter.what i passed on to him is out of a Haynes Manual.
have you check the ful safety cutoff switch? i had a ford that had that problem years ago. it should be in the rewar cargo area somewhere.....good luck
ok i hot wired the fuel pump like you guys said and the pump ran . So i called one of my buddies ith a uhaul trailer aand got it over to my local garage. Turns out that the inertia switch, computer, and fuel pump relay. $506 They say that the relay got water in it and that shorted the computer and inertia switch. Fun stuff. So over all, from the mud back to the city for towing and then to fix all the stuff im in the hole about $750, but i wouldnt trade my truck for any little rice burner or chevy piece of cr@p
Thanks for all the info
i guess anythings possible ,just sounds like an awful lot.think i woulda wanted a second oppinion. And after all was said and done anyway,i for sure woulda wanted a kiss with that
