I think I'm wrong here. I thought you could get a 6.2 with the max tow on a KR!?!
I think with the King Ranch, it falls under "Max Trailer Tow Package - Power, Chrome Mirror (60C)", and within the details for that option, it states:
MAX TRAILER TOW PACKAGE – POWER, CHROME MIRROR (60C) Availability:
Optional on Lariat, King Ranch® and Platinum
Requires:
3.5L EcoBoost™ Engine (99T) or 6.2L V8 (996)
6.2L V8 on Lariat and Platinum also requires SuperCrew 145" WB
3.73 LS rear-axle ratio
3.73 electronic-locking differential axle (Lariat or King Ranch® w/Off-
Road Pkg. – 55A)
Includes:
Upgraded rear bumper
Class IV trailer hitch receiver
7-pin wiring harness
Upgraded radiator
Auxiliary transmission oil cooler
Trailer Brake Control
Side Mirrors, Manual Telescoping Trailer Tow w/Power Glass (includes heat, memory, turn signal & puddle lamps & Chrome Skull Caps)
I think this is basically saying that the Lariat & Platinum get the 6.2L, but that is even limited to SuperCrew 145" WB models. I am not entirely sure about that though, as this is one of the most "I before E, except after C" exception-riddled Order Guides that I have seen to date.
I blame C.A.F.E For the 6.2's Limited availibility in the F-150. When I first heard the 6.2L was gonna be relesed in the 2011 models I got excited at the prospect of having a 6.2L FX4 extended cab, but then I found out about the availibility, and now I'm opting for the 5.0L, but after I got a chance to drive ''all of the new 2011 engines'' I found the 5.0L to be more than suitable. During my test drive I compared power and fuel econmy ''according to the trucks computer'' and the 5.0L was actually pretty close to the 6.2L in terms of unloaded accelration, close enough If you were racing I would say it would be a driver's race in two comparably equipped models. All the while the 5.0L was avaraging about 4 1/2 miles per gallon better than the 6.2L was on a 10 minute highway drive.
So I think personally after driving both I would still go with the 5.0L, but at the same time I don't need the max tow package. I can see how it would **** people off who do need max tow but either don't want or don't trust the Ecoboost. But once again you can thank C.A.F.E and Uncle Sam for limiting our choice's. Honestly I would rather just seee a gas tax increase instead of forcing automakers to limit engine availbility. At least that way the people get to choose what engine goes in what truck. And in that case most people who drive large trucks just for getting grocery's or to feel like a marlboro man would trade off the truck in favor of something smaller and more fuel efficent. And the people who don't mind paying the extra tax for gas because they either absolutly need a truck or are just willing to pay the tax regaurdless would have a broader range of how they can option out their new trucks.
I don't think it's just about profitability. I think Matts72 hit it right on the head by referring to the EPA and CAFE laws.
Federal law requires that each car company maintain a certain average MPG for their vehicles by category. Ford simply can't produce 100% of their F150s with this engine, as the 12/16 fuel economy figure would make that illegal. They can only make very few otherwise they face steep fines for making inefficient vehicles.
Limiting the top engine to the higher trim levels has always been a GM thing. I think Ford was faced with a choice of doing this or not offering it at all. In this case I'm glad we at least have the option!
I would bet that it's a combination of both but profitability factors are on the top of the list. That's always the bottom line.
