Was towing a 10k lb trailer last night with tow-haul on and was engine braking in 4th gear down a steep hill. Reached the bottom of the hill and lost engine power. Engine had run flawlessly for 700 miles of the trip. Fuel pressure, oil pressure, and EOT/ECT/Trans temps were all normal per Isspro/ScanGauge gauges. Oil and fuel pressure come up when cranking but engine won't start. ScanGauge shows no codes. I'm going to work through Bismic's no-start list as far as I can (out of town with limited tools/equipment) but just wondered if anyone has seen this specific scenario where the engine dies while engine-braking and won't restart.
Visually confirmed oil flow in filter housing, fuel flow in upper filter, wiring harnesses for chaffing (none), pulled icp sensor connector test. Nothing yet Going to check ficm voltage and icp voltage next.
Ok I checked Ficm voltage and it's good. Didn't confirm HPOP but I can't fix that anyway. Guess it's going to be towed to a dealer. Anybody know a good diesel tech in Greenville sc?
Might want to try asking in the SC chapter forum they may know the best place to go. Hey, who knows maybe one of those guys has an autoenginuity that can help you out. South Carolina Chapter - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums
so fuel knock is going to be no sync/ ficm sync , no/low ficm voltage or icp below 500psi
Thanks Cheezit, I gave this to the tech who is working on it this AM. I confirmed that the ficm voltage is good, so I'll let you know which it ends up being.
I guess it's water under the bridge at this point, but was there some way I could have checked the ficm sync without a scanner?
Turned out to be the IPR valve. Kudos to Ian and Morey at Fairway Ford in Greenville SC. They got me back on the road before lunchtime. There are still questions about the cause but that's going to be another thread. Thanks to all for the replies.
