My 92F150XLT 170,000 miles. It is on it's third alternater. This one has abought 30,000 on it .Last week it started to read higher than normal. When I cruse at 75-80 MPH. the gadge reads what I think is at least one and one half amp higher than normal. When I lifted the hood I thought I smelled battery acid. Is this a battery or a alternater problem? Thanks SAV
If you smelled battery acid, it's because your charging system is overcharging the battery. I'd look first to see if there's a problem with the voltage regulator being stuck closed so the battery is charging all the time. The smell is indicative that the battery has reached "gasing voltage", and the eletrolyte (the acid inside) is bubbling and giving off the fumes you smell.
If the voltage regulator is stuck closed in the charging position, your alternator is also loaded down and putting out all the time, rather than switching on and off as necessary to keep the battery fully charged. This may also explain why you're ripping through alternators at the rate you are.
