Turbo Research

I am currently building a turbo kit for my inline 6. But i need a turbo that has good spool at low rpms. I am prob going to go dual turbo and use a larger one after smaller one so i can boost at high and low rpms. But i am not sure what brands to get. I want a bearing one. Not sure what to look for tho. I would like to see if older ford diesel turbos will work and maybe an older mustang turbo to get the high rpm spooling.

Inline 6? Straight 200 inline 6?

I need some details to point you in the right direction. Is the bottom end forged? What RPM are you spinning the engine too?

As far as turbos go, Precision is a great turbo and makes awesome Ball Bearing turbos. A ball bearing turbo will reduce spool rpm. For a inline engine, a large single turbo is more cost effective to run. Easier pipe routing, quicker spooling(depending on application), and cheaper then buying 2 smaller ball bearing turbos.

Wow, well it is a 4.9L (300) and what you mean by bottom end? currently right now it peaks at 5.5k stock according to my tach installed. i would eventually like to see constant acceleration to 4k and peak at 6k to 6.5k but i will need to rebuild and do some major work to the inner motor especially the rings and push rods and valve springs etc.

Reason i chose 2 instead of a single is i will have a wider band on power increase. I can always do a bearing initial and non bearing after for the second. I am just looking for insane bang for the buck with this turbo. The tuning wont be an issue either so i can maximize performance due to a good friend of mine down at the drag

Stupid question: 4.9L diesel or gas?

Go with a Precision Single ball bearing turbo. You want bang for the buck. A large version of what Im talking about is over 2K alone.

its a gas lol. The ford 300, only reason i said diesel turbo is because they spool at lower rpm ranges. Well know any that would start around 1800 to 2k?

Naturally these motors are low rpm motors. I mean it idles around 600-1000 rpm depending on how you have it set up and shifts around 3500 with hitting it a bit lol, it is not a high rpm range motor. ALL LOW END TORQUE!! haha

Ok, I was thinking of a specific motor and wanted to make sure I was giving you currect information.

Spool is determined by alot of things. Impeller size, A/R ratio, engine RPM, head flow, engine size.

Your working with 300 cid, so a single is a must here. Twins on a motor that small will be a waste.

If you want something to come on that early and hold to 6K, you will be looking at something in the 50mm range most likely. There are alot of variables here. I would go on the small end with a 50-51mm Precision Ball Bearing turbo with probably an A/R ratio in the .80-.90s. You can also get a Billet wheeled turbo and that will further reduce spool time.

Sorry i might have confused you, im looking for it to spool up to 4k and 5k if i can but i want the motor to peak at 6k all together. So a constant PSI at 4k to 5k and stay constant up to 6k.

So what kind of price range am i looking at and is that a diesel turbo or a gas turbo? size wise and spec wise you provided.

Also what is billet wheeled?

The turbo I mentioned is a 50mm gas motor turbo and will cost about 1500 dollars. I have to call a buddy of mine to get an actually price if you wanted one.

It will also hold a constant PSI up to your RPM range given. After you built the motor with a strong crank, forged rods, and the correct pistons.

Billet wheeled is where the compressor wheel on the front of the turbo is make from a solid piece of billet aluminum. It is lighter, stronger, and has a much more defined profile compared to normal wheeled turbos. This helps to bring spool time down and with the better profile of the wheel itself actually yields more power with the same turbo sized compared traditional wheeled turbos.

What is the huge difference in a gas turbo vs a diesel turbo?

Also which vehicle could i maybe scrap one from. Will cost about 1/3 of the price if i can find one at a local scrap yard.

The different between the two will be the A/R ratio. Not sure if there will be others.

That turbo is an aftermarket performance part only. No vehicle will have it on it and billet wheeled turbos are only made by a few turbo companies.

uhm alot of small cars came with turbos and still do. Especially the diesel turbos are on most if not all diesels now haha. Like the civic SI i know came with one but not sure which one. Most years after 94 im pretty sure ALL SI had the turbo. Either way i will start shoppin and get a parts list together. Any preferance on Intercoolers or waste gate?
