use my step & pole frequently and wouldn't sell or trade it...only problem is with a rigid bed cover, it doesnt open wide enough to step all the way in, but nevertheless the step & pole sure help to reach the cargo way in the back! Best part is when someone new asks what the pole is for...tell them its an antenna for contacting other planets & watch the reaction! :-)
Lol.... tin foil on the top of the cap so they can't read my mind too!
Why are so many people against the step/handle? I like mine alot and use it whenever I get in the bed to access my toolbox. Maybe I'm just starting to show my age (43)...lmao!
I'm with you. I wouldn't want another truck without it!
It's just a plastic cover, a knuckle with a few bolts and it's off, they look like a stock gate with the cover on, except you still have the step... I like the step, not the geyser bar.
Totally reversible if you get the cover-plate sprayed separately, then installed. I put a sheet of 1/4 plywood, used some of the stock bolts, and bought some bolts from Home Depot to make the plywood suck tight to the gate. The amount of it sticking up is a pain in the butt, especially if you have a rolling cargobed or use your truck for anything like a truck was intended for.

So does anyone know if i remove the pole and put fords plate over it can i someday in the future put the pole back on ??
Also a ford part number?
Unless you are sliding a lot of abrasive cargo in and out I don't see the upside of doing this? I have a Line X bed and sidewalls and the OEM plastic/vinyx cover for inside the tailgate. It provides good protection.
just when sliding out my ice fishing stuff its catches on it. Also when summer comes i will be sliding in & out a lot of concrete materials (landscaping tools)

43? Snort! Wait 'til you're pushing 63 like me!
If it wasn't for the shell I would put on the bed, I'd get the steps. The stripper pole would be nice except no one would want to watch a fat, old broad like me...er...it would get in the way.
I don't remember the part number, but if you go to your dealership or parts store have them bring up the schematics of a non step tailgate and use that access cover. That's what i did at least. you will have to get new screws to attach the plate though. they are pricy at the dealership so i picked up a package at lowes for less than half the price. I think the replacement cover plate was around $60 from the dealership. this process is also completely reversible as long as you don't lose the original hardware. I did mine about 6 months ago but haven't gotten around do spraying the bed liner on the tailgate yet.
My dealer has my 2010 SCREW FX4 in now, my question is this:
It has the tailgate step, I was wanting to Line-X the complete bed, tailgate included. They first told me they could remove the tailgate plastic protector along with the folding handle, no problem, I wouldn't even know it was there. I guess not, no can do? They've offered to swap tailgates from a black Lariat (both have the backup camera), but the Lariat has a chrome handle. Really didn't want the chrome handle, how hard is it to replace the handle?
Has anyone removed there tailgate protector & assist handle? I was told there was several exposed holes underneath? I don't mind the step, but really dislike the tailgate protector & handle.
Any info would be appreciated!!!
I have the factory spray in liner, with a step, I don't mind the plastic cover and I really thought the step was a gimmick but it came with the Lariat Ultimate package, but I am glad I got it.

So like if they don't spray the new bolts you put in to hold the plate and don't lose the pole hardware you took out...it will bolt right back in?
Maybe someone in thread can help me? I tried to post in the wanted forum but for some reason it wouldn't let me post.
I'm looking for the plastic cover for the pull out step, I pushed an old deep freeze out of my box and it took a big chunk of the plastic cover with it . I really hate to buy one from the dealer, they want $260 bucks for the plastic cover (that's crazy). I have a 2010 F150 but I assume they are all the same (the plastic cover).
I was hoping you guy's might know of an after market place that sells them or someone that has one for a reasonable price.

You might try a salvage yard, or local body shop????
