PTO/1356

Hey Guys,
I got a line on a 1356 transfercase with a PTO. I have never heard of one. I'm wondering if any of you guys got any info on it. Like weight or size differnce? Where the pto comes out? How much torque can it teransmit? The guy is sending me pics. Are there problems with them? He said it was out of a "Fish and Game" Bronco. I've seen a couple of those, but not with a PTO. Maybe I never looked close enough.

I haven't ever seen one. But that doesn't mean much. I'd be interested in those answers myself.

i'm thinking the 1356 behind my Powerstroke that came out of a 90 F250 has a PTO cover, as did the one i replaced it with never had it hooked up or anything.

Ok, I just found an image... from what little research i've done, it seems they were most likely to appear under an F-350 from the mid 90's. Found HERE.

That is an interesting site Greystreak. I wish the picture showed how the pto was arranged. I guess it bolts on in place of that cover. I assume it must be gear driven. Wonder what speed it turns?

Yes, PTO devices bolt directly in place of the cover plate and their gearing meshes with the PTO gear in the t-case/transmission that is driving it. Often these devices are available in two or more configurations to allow it to be mounted facing up or down or forward or backward depending upon clearance available in the vehicle.

PTO speed is dependent upon what gear you are in and the drive ratio for the added component itself. Typically, a PTO device has a recommended RPM to generate a given output (hydraulic pressure, air pressure, electricity, etc.) The device will give a range and an optimal RPM in most cases. This is why PTO's work best with manual transmissions since you can select a gear to drive it at an RPM that will generate the necessary pressure or electricity.
