the idi and powerstrokes are completely different animals, and no parts interchange.
the only thing they share in common are displacement and trans bell housing bolt pattern.

545 stroker FTW!!!!

and no you can't make an idi into a powerstroke, the blocks and heads won't handle the boost like the later model stuff, and they are expensive as hell to rebuild with power in mind. stroker big blocks are where its at for a bog truck hands down. get a big block with a c-6 4x4 trans and never look back if you want it to be a bog truck, just remember how much you are willing to spend determines how fast you go, and speed ain't cheap, so you better be in it all the way or save yourself the headache and loss of money, because you never get back the money you spend. resale value on mud trucks is crap.

eeeeh, a Motorcraft FL1A works on just about every carb'd Ford engine since the 60s and maybe a few more.

then you already have your answer. depending on cash, start with a stock carbed 460 from 1986 and older. a simple cam swap timing chain set, good intake w/ appropriate carb, and a decent set of headers would be a good point to start from.

The IDIs arent expensive to rebuild, you can even reuse the roller cam.

Start with a 6.9L though, you don't want to bore-out a 7.3L (OR 7.3L PowerStroke for that matter) as the cylinder walls are already thinner than they really should be. Sleeving them is too expensive.

I'd say sell that truck and buy a 1 ton gas truck to start off with.

^^^not a bad option.

What exactly are you going to do with the truck? I know you said "strait up mud" but what exactly are you doing? Racing? Bogs? Back yard and cornfield mud?

pretty sure dave the idi forum moderator has like 5k or better tied up in a solid built idi, and a stock 460 with a simple cam, carb intake swap would walk all over it in the mud. this guy wants a bog truck, not a tow rig, and no idi will ever be able to reliably take the abuse of and rpm's of actual mudding.

but you are correct on the 7.3 blocks being junk for rebuild purposes if this guy goes that route. not only are sleeves costly, but they fail and come loose often.

Dave S. went way beyond a rebuild.

A gasser would require a similar amount of money to get the same performance. Even if you could do it significantly cheaper (remember he has a TURBO also) the fuel savings would make up for it if it's driven much at all.
