^^^200hp with 500tq and 500hp with 500tq are two entirely different things. - not saying thats what his engine or any other engine is making.
$5000 will build one helluva 460 with iron heads and a really nice 460 with aluminum heads.
The guy wants a mud build so he needs a gas engine - end of story. Might as well start with the biggest available factory gas engine so he has room to grow.
when a diesel can hit 5500+rpms all day then it will be an option for a bog truck, until then there is no comparison.
seriously.
take a stock carb 460 $500 or less used in running condition, and put in a timing chain $50 or less, cam $200 or less, intake $200 or less, a good carb can be had for $300ish and under with your own rebuild, and a set of cheap headers for $200 or less.
depending on what parts you put in it, a motor like this will stomp most any idi all day every day no ifs ands or buts. try to build an idi with that kind of money, that pretty much covers a stock rebuild kit for one.
just sayin'.
Your right, mud boggers don't get a lot of miles put on them and RPMs matter.
Basically I wanted to refute the idea that an IDI (or a Cummins for that matter) are expensive to rebuild.
However as this thread is about MUD BOGGERS I will concede that a big block is the way to go.
ANY other use I'd go TURBO diesel.
If I had an unlimited budget I'd still go diesel. Can you imagine what one of those slded pullers could do in a mud bog?
i still think even the hopped up 1000hp diesels would suck for a bogger. too heavy on the nose and they would sink the front axle before boost kicked in and they had enough wheelspeed to do anything about it. i could be wrong, but thats how i see it playing out.
well wat i want to do is put a 12 inch lift on the the truck along wit a 3 inch body lift, convert front axel to solid strait axel, drop transfer case, run 5.50 gears or better, i want to run 48 inch tires or better , i was also thinking of adding nos. i wanna go big cause i aint going home this will be a strait mudd bogger no corn feild, i live in florida n we got some deep sticky mud here n i want to be able to have enoth hp for it
1. floridah ghey mud isn't mud, that corn field mud as you called it will stop ags in a heartbeat, ask some farmers i know
2. being that you are a floridah truck guy skip one tons altogether and just get some rocks, it will be cheaper in the long run.
3. mentioning nos brings the lollerz in a big way
4. here's my old 94 with a 12'' and 3'' on 44'' boggers, 48's is doable, but anything much bigger requires some fender chopping.
Dont bolt on a ghey set of banana springs. 4 link it and be done
Rocks. 2.5s minimum or 5tons preferably
Get the NP200 and driveshafts out of the Deuce when you steal its axles
Might as well get into the 54" range on Ags. It seems like theres a much better selection in that size than it is in the 46-48" range. R1 and R2 tread type seem popular.
What do you know about NOS? Better bump than build up another grand or two for the NOS, forged pistons and good strong rods/bolts/studs etc.
Ill put SC cornfield mud against the Floriduh mud any day of the week. 6" of mud under 6' of water isnt a big deal IMO...especially when most of these idiots run 66 R2s.
What about a running a SB. 351s are cheap and can be built very well on a limited budget. I personally like the BB but money wise i wish i could go SB in my 75 f250 that i mud race because of cost. What about weight wise? how much less does the 351 compare to the 460?

Truficles! Don't even think about going the cheapo hyper piston route if you plan to run nitrous. Think H-beam rods and at a minimum a good set of file fit plasma-moly rings that are gapped according to how large of a shot you plan on hitting the motor with!

You can keep that SC concrete mix you call mud! I'll stick with the sloppy sticky VA red clay. It's tougher to get through, but easier to clean
illinois has red clay or sandy silty **** that kills any and all bearings depending on where you are. we also haeve a god amount of just mucky slushy **** mud that eats stuff like shoes and tires. its good fun

1,000 HP and 1,800-2,000 ft. lbs will make up for A LOT of weight. You can spin a diesel up to 5K RPMs plus if you have enough money.
but it still has to spool up and/or have a load on the engine to get the turbo doing its thing, and by that time you are screwed unless you are dialed in like a madman. and sled pulling is not a comparable situation with mud running.
too rich for my blood, i'll take a gasser any day, but to each their own. have fun making smoke and such.
You start accellerating 3-5 tons of truck with extremly agressive tires you'll get spooled-up.
IF I had the money I wouldn't do it, I'd build a big-block, but I'd like to see someone else do it.
