Hey guys, I don’t post much but I read the forums daily. I have a cooling system question. I'm planning on doing some cooling system maintenance, replace upper ( dual alt) and lower radiator hoses, new t-stat, housing, flush and upgrade to ELC. While I have the cooling system tore apart that far, would it be wise to also replace the water pump? The truck has 112,000 miles on it and the water pump appears to be stock. The pump looks to be in good shape, bearings feel ok and no leaks. I drive a service truck most of the time and work 60 hrs. a week so when I get to drive my PSD I don’t like to have any downtime. It's weird but I look forward to driving it. Wife thinks im crazy, lol.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> I might put 1500 miles a year on the truck and I still change the oil every year, I’m kind of a fanatic about maintenance. I have issues, lol<o></o> Thanks<o></o>

Mine just failed at 118k with no warning. No leaking one day, the next I'm driving and I'm suddenly in limp mode. Pop the hood, no coolant in the de-gas bottle and coolant leaking out the weep hole.
So I would say if you're doing all that, might as well replace it while you're there on your terms. Better than being in traffic in limp mode....
You may hear a squeak or a squeal or it can go out without any noise. My water pump lasted about 60,000 and was just after a antifreeze flush and replacement. It may go out today or last 2-3 years or more, its a crap shoot.
Go ahead and change it out while it's torn down that far.Get a new belt also.I also put in a new degas bottle and cap.Took me about 6 hours with a few beer breaks.
my original pump went 50k. That replacement went 65K before I replaced it a few months ago. Some have gotten 150K or much more on the original pump. Definitely a crap shoot. If I only drove locally I would leave it but if I towed campers on family vacations long distances from home I would replace it. Depends on what you use the truck for that defines the risk.
I just got done replacing my water pump, lasted about 160,000 mi. And while I had all the coolant out of the engine and the water pump off I did my oil cooler o-rings. It's a crap shoot It my last it my go out tomorrow.

Man, thats exactly what i was think'n. I've got 105k on my oem, so it's get'n replaced with the new "red" coolant, along with the o-rings in the oil cooler. My luck would be to do the coolant change, just to have the oil cooler start to leak.
Thanks for the input, I might as well do the water pump while im at it.
After all it's only time and money, lol, you cant put a price on reliability. I dont want to have to tear it all down again if i can help it. Unless the new one leaks . I take the truck hunting in eastern oregon where there is no parts houses for 100 miles, kinda sucks to break down out there, esp in the winter!!!!
Although mines still the stock OEM, don't chince and get a remanufactured or off name pump, pay the money and get an OEM, you'll be glad you did, lots of horror stories here from the remans. I have a 155,000 on mine and come spring a OEM from Clay or Partsguyed.com is going in.
Are any of you running a coolant filter? I think the casting sand in some may be the reason for early water pump failure....
My original pump lasted about 83k miles, then I replaced it with NEW and did the 203* TStat, billet housing, and ELC (Red) coolant, and buy, the first time I changed the filter it had ALOT of crap in it!!
