Best Angle to Replace Oil Filter?
I'm not sure if there are differences between the years, but on my '98 the filter is remote from the engine block and is up front just behind the bumper. I loosen it from underneath, then put a catch pan under it and finish unscrewing it by reaching through the driver's side wheel opening.

You have to snake up around the driver’s side A-arm, tie rod and front dif (4x4). Very little room for a wrench. Use a 3/8 ratchet and an end type filter wrench. The oil will run down the side of the block and over the differential. Have a pan and a lot of rags handy. Be careful not to over tighten the new filter. If you do, you'll have to go at it through the wheel well. No easy task.
I'll ask a question, has anyone mounted a remote oil filter on a 5.4L? May be more trouble than it’s worth. With the frond skid plate, there's really not much in the way of extra room.

Best Angle to Replace Oil Filter?
Mine has the factory remote oil filter already on it. After taking a look at some others without it, I am really glad I have it. It is bolted to the outside of the frame just behind the driver's corner of the front bumper. Never been so easy to change a filter.
