I have a 82 F250 that had a c6 3 speed automatic transmission and I swaped it out for a 4 speed automatic which I think is the AOD model. The 4 speed automatic came out of a 85 F150 and from what I have seen the transmission as never been opened and it still had the oringnal filter in it. Before I put it in my truck I changed the filter and fluid and then after it was in I took the truck for a test drive and went about a mile down the road and it shifted good with no problems when I turned around to head back to the house the transmission started making a bad whining nosie from the bellhousing and now the transmission will not shift out of first gear. I don't know much about transmissions so I called around to try and get some info on what the nosie could be. I was told by several different people saying it most likly is the torque converter is bad. Anyone out there that could give me some insight to what this nosie may be I would really be grateful. Thanks for looking
Yes, that's it. There is no kickdown cable on an AOD.
Now for the bad news - if the pressure wasn't set right, and didn't increase correctly with throttle opening, there wasn't enough pressure to keep the clutches engaged. That causes slip, which destroys transmissions. What does the ATF look and smell like?
before we put it in and before I changed the fiter and fluid the color was a mid red and it didn't smell burnt and after we test drove it for that mile the color turn dark red and then smelt a little burnt. How would the pressure be adjusted on this transmission?
I watched the video and have so sort of idea now in that video it has it all hooked up to a throtlle body set up I have a carb on my motor so would the setup be the same?
Should be the same but it is important that the cable fittings are correct for the carb linkage. Where the cable mounts at the carb should be such that the cable pulls out in a straight line. There are instructions for the carb setup but for the life of me I can`t remember where they are.
The best way to set it up is for a shop to do it with a line pressure gauge.
But MK may know more on that.
Maybe, maybe not. Like MK says a lot depends on if the trans is already destroyed due to improperly adjusted TV cable in the first place.
Only way, to find out. I think, is to try adjusting the cable and see.
ok well I had the cable adjusted and the whining is still there and it still won't shift out of first could the torque conveter be bad? The whining noise is coming from the bellhousing and I was wondering if the converter could stop it from shifting into any other gears?
Doesn`t sound good. With a bad torque converter I would think you would have either no forward or reverse, or sluggish acceleration while changing through the gears.
I think, if it was me, I would drop the pan and see if there is any debris in it. But, if he was online, MK could give a better opinion.
ok I droped the pan and decided to just change the filter again and put new fluid in. When I droped the pan and I looked at the bottom to see if there was anything there all that was there was a few metal flakes. They where not big and at first I thought they was chunks but when I touched them they where slim flakes. I put the pan back up and hooked everything back and it's still doing the same thing so I have decided to put my c6 back in. I want to thank you guys for all the info and help I would of never know about any of this stuff without guys,Thanks again!
