You cannot remove a muffler from any exhaust system. Not even from the pre '73 cars that don't have to be smogged. But if you get a tech that doesn't give a dang if you have one or not, then you're fine.
When I smogged my Ex and my F250, the tech never even looked under my truck to see if it had a muffler.
