Bummer. No way to overcome this problem or is this just a bad idea.
This is the concept. 87 club wagon has a 302 with E7TE heads. Has a cam in it. Can be built to get more power. Van also has the AOD with the wider gear ratio. Paid 300 for the van.
Motor and trans into 79 bronco. The Bronc has a c-6 that needs work. What do you think.
79 Bronco has either a 351m/400 if it is stock so it has the 'big block' bell housing that will only match up to a trans from 351m/400 or 429/460. Also the tailshaft on a 2wd trans is different than a 4wd trans. If you want an over drive trans your best bet is to find an e4od that was behind a 460 in a later truck. I believe you will need a rear end with a speed sensor as well to operate an e4od (electronic 4 spd overdrive). I had a choice of a few different rear ends for my Bronco and I chose the sterling 10.25 with a speed sensor because I had planned on putting an EFI 460 and e4od in it, but cirumstance ended up with me putting a carbed 460 in it. The ford 8.8" rear will have a speed sensor in it if you want to put that in there to keep your 5x5.5 bolt pattern for your wheels, but with all the parts you have to put in the thing.. you'll never make it back in fuel economy by just adding an overdrive...
Thanks for the input guys. So I guess its back to the drawing board. Man I just love this Bronco but don't have a lot of cash to put into it.
So did the later broncos get the E4OD. Maybe i can find one with the controller at the salvage yard. These late 80's vans could also be 4x4s. What trans did those vans get. I still have the 351m. the heads are off due to an incomplete valve job by the machine shop that rebuilt the long block.
I Think, Ford did not make the 4x4 vans they were aftermarket. I also think The e4od is controlled buy the same ECM as the EFI so it would most likely not work with out the input from the EFI.
Where are you at I may want the AOD from the 4x2 van?
the only feasible option for an overdrive transmission in that bronco is a zf 5 speed manual from a late 80's to 97 f250 or 350 4x4 that had a 460, and it's still not a cheap swap, but it is the easiest and cheapest. almost all the ford transmissions have an integrated bell housing and only fit one engine family. that bronco has a 351m, which only shares a pattern with the 400, 429, and 460 and a few industrial motors.
kris was right when he said the e40d won't work without a standalone computer, they are aftermarket and cost a lot. you could find a complete efi 460 w/e40d and computer and make it work all together, but you can't make the factory ford computer run just the tranny by its self.
Had a bad response from server for a while Would be happy to get rid of the aod but its a pre 88 and from my sources that means an oiling problem that was corrected on 88 models. I am a mechanic and could modify it if there was any way to correct it but the planetary is more than likely past it. And I live too far away in Tx.
If there is a trans that I could use with the 302 I would like to go that route. Stock it had more hp than the stock 351 and only 10 less ftlbs of torque. Makes torque at higher revs though. But with a modest home porting job I can get the max flow for that intake and get some of that torque back. If not It would make one Bad *** Pinto motor.
