In relation to my other thread on my leak at the bellhousing, I want to change the front seal. I can't find anything on it, or what it looks like other than a schematic for a Ford AOD that shows a "front pump seal" or a "front pump "O" ring". Is this correct? How do I change this seal? Will it pull out with the torque converter removed, or is it a press fit?
Thanks for the help. It is in an '85 F150 5.0 4x4 with the AOD.
Tell the parts store you want the front seal for the torque converter. If you tell them the pump seal they may try to give you the big oring that goes around the pump itself. Anyway my parts store would.
Thanks Dave, sounds easy enough, I have a set of dental picks that are great for that sort of thing.
Is the front pump seal the correct seal?
It's going to take something bigger than a dental pick. Ideally, using one half of slide hammer works well. Taking a decent size piece of metal or heating and bending the end of a screwdriver and using it may work. I think the parts store may have a seal removal tool also. They are in there pretty good. Just try not to bung up the tranny too bad trying to get it out.
Luckily from the auto body class in high school many many many MANY years ago, I still happen to have a slide hammer. I had to grind the hook a bit to fit in there, but a couple pops and out it came. I rented a tranny jack Saturday morning and went to work, took all day from about 1pm to almost midnight, but got it done. My main issue is something I ate had me running to the bathroom all afternoon, that ate up a lot of time! I drained all the fluid from the pan and the torque converter, I had no idea the TC held that much fluid! I poured 3 qts into it before reinstalling just to make sure it was not dry on restart. Took a full case of 12 to get back to operating level. The old fluid was the color and smell of burnt coffee, never seen fluid that bad before. I'll wait a few days and drain the pan again, and if it comes out decent looking, I'll change the filter and refill it - the drain plug I installed in the pan years ago is coming in real handy!
But, got it done, back together and drove it to church this morning. A slight hesitation when I put it into drive, and when the pedal is on the floor it doesn't want to upshift until I let off, but other that that it seems just fine. I am sure a good filter change and some more fresh fluid should help that a little bit. For now, however, I put about $60 in fluid and a $4.99 into it and am back on the road. I'll replace the tranny with a rebuilt probably this summer after the new $6K furnace, the $3K front loader washer/dryer and the $1400 gun safe are all behind us - UGH! Thank God I'm still getting a paycheck! Knock on wood......
