Exhaust 101

Could someone be so kind as to spoon feed me some info? I just can't seem to get it. I have been reading post on this forum trying to figure out the advantage of and how to increase the size of the down pipe. My understanding is that the opening out of my tubo is 2 1/4 inches. So will increasing the size of the pipe really help? Will I see an increase of power or mpg or both? Is there a flange or something I can buy to increase the opening size?

I have the stock system on the truck. Any other upgrades you could recommend?

Thanks!

If I understand correctly, you have the factory turbo and it says ford on the air intake, correct? If so, you would need a upgraded turbine housing with a 3inch outlet/down-pipe that ATS sold. I don't know if they still make them but I know they used to. Thats what you would need made just for that turbo setup.

I have the factory turbo on my recently purchased 7.3 turbo motor and ordered the down pipe from banks this last week. The part number is 52103. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...r-exhaust.html
Shipped to my house was $110, not in stock. I called today and they said it would ship out early next week. They have a manufacturer make it for them. It hooks up to the factory turbo outlet. It will help better than the smashed factory pipe. But you might be able to purchase the ATS upgrade kit # 202-903-3158. Call ATS $500+. They had them back ordered. People say it was worth the money.

Factory turbo with Ford on the intake. Upgraded turbine housing? Where would I find ATS equipment and would it be worth it? What would I gain?

So you are saying that you will use the existing 2 1/4 inch outlet and attach a 3" pipe? Will the 3" pipe increase airflow even though the outlet remains the same?

Yes. The banks downpipe bolts right up to the factory outlet.

Anything is better than the smashed down stock pipe. If I had the extra $500+ to blow, then I would see if ATS still sells the upgrade kit. But for my needs the Banks downpipe will do.

Yea, $500 is a bit much for me too. Are you doing it yourself or taking it to a shop? Are you replacing anything else on the system?

Thanks for the picture. That makes it much clearer for my feeble mind. Did you see a big difference when you replaced it?

Yes, I am going to do it myself. I will need to get another 45 degree pipe so it will line up with the rest of the exhaust. I will see when the down pipe gets here to get a better idea. The other thing that I could see to do, is to make a custom cold air intake. Getting air from the outside the engine bay. I have an egt gauge. I will get pillar gauges (boost, oil pressure).

Yes, from what I understand ATS would give you a upgraded turbine housing with a 3inch outlet/down-pipe. Nothing $500 can't do. This pic is different than ATS but you can get the idea. The Shiny metal housing on the bottom/left is the compression housing. And the housing right above (where the waste-gate is attached) is the turbine housing.

I added a fresh air intake myself a while back. I cut a hole in the intake attached a water heater vent and routed it to beside the radiator. I couldn't tell much difference, but then I did nothing to the exhaust.

I am interested to see how that pipe you bought turns out. If you don't mind, let us know.

Thanks for the picture, that helps a lot. I noticed on another thread mentioned ealier that a poster named Dave posted had a picture of the ATI outlet vs the stock outlet, but it was no longer there. Maybe I can pm him to repost it.
