Friend of mine has a 1990 F150 XLT Lariat 4x4 with 300 straight 6, E4OD.
It's a field truck joy rider and yard worker, has been for the past couple years, said it doesn't have Reverse, and it's been like this for a long time, but hes getting tired of not having reverse.
Everything works fine, drives fine, shifts good, just doesn't have reverse.
John,have your friend remove his trans pan and check the filter.
it appears the filter can sometimes slip out since it's held in using just an O-ring.however i feel this is more than enough,and i think it may be due to lack of maintenance/running the same old filter more than anything.however,they make a clip you can buy to hold the filter in.
if the filter is changed regularly like it should be (at least every other flush,so a max of 60k miles) and the old O-ring has been removed (sometimes another common mishap,is to not making sure it came out with the old filter) it should be fine.
anyway,long story short;
if the filter drops,this can cause the loss of reverse.
it just costs a new pan gasket to check it,if he doesn't have a rubber one,otherwise just a messy time and free,if he catches all that red gold.
you'll personally like to hear,that reverse is not electronically controlled.
naturally,there will be many more replies with what it could be.however i always start with the free and basic things first and go from there.
Two questions : Any noises in reverse? Take it on the highway, does OD work? My '85 AOD blew going down the freeway and after that was NO OD and NO reverse . Its a planetary gear set that is used in both of those gears.
