I got the new motor all hooked up, and I've put a remaned ip on it. I took it out for a drive (I got some funny looks, with no hood, headlights, or bumper, and a bare radiator showing) and it did something kind of funny.
After I got to speed (say about 55) I let off of it, and it did the old engine braking just fine. But when I pressed the clutch, the rpms fell and it died. It did this a number of times, usually in 4th or 5th gear at higher speeds.
What's the deal? Is it ip timing? I had it advanced a little at first, and it died a lot. Then I put it back in the middle so the marks lined up, and it didn't die but it still fell really low, and I was trying harder to prevent it from dying, so I'm not sure if that's it.
*Side Note* The idle is set at about 850.
*edit* also I installed a new clutch slave and master cylinder, and I don't think they're totally primed up yet. Its taking ridiculously long, and I'm starting to think something is wrong. It has some resistance when you press it, but it come back slow, especially the last couple of inches.
I got the ip for my last engine because the old one huffed. When I did the swap I figured "What the heck, this pump only has like 1000 miles on it, might as well put it on". The fuel filter is also the same age.
The injectors all have only 80,000 miles on them, except one (I crossthreaded a line on one, so I just took the injector off the old engine, and I couldn't tell you how old that one is...).
So when you say fuel pump, are you talking about the lift pump? because I just put one on my old engine shortly before the ip. I think I might have switched that to the new engine too.
Sorry its kind of hard for me to remember everything I've done, as I did all the switching and stuff way back in september (It's been a long loooong project, and I'm finally nearing the end, just need to tweak a few more things...). I would just go out and look at it, but I'm away at school right now, and I won't be back until the weekend.
I've had that happen on a few trucks I've test drove which pointed toward the ancient-looking IP and Injectors.
On my own, with the older IP and Injectors it would idle awesome, but when you revved it up and let off quick, it would die just like yours.
After replacement of the IP and Injectors, haven't had that problem since.
If it's been sitting for a while, you might run a dose of Power Service through the fuel system if the fuel is old.
Timing won't cause this, my truck runs pretty good with timing marks just lined up. Still got too much going on to bring the truck in to the fuel shop to get timed.
Maybe the injectors, but I hope not since I just resealed them while I had it apart...
I think I do have some diesel kleen on the shelf in the shop, but then again it might be fuel supplement w/ cetane boost.... can't remember... Should I just put some in the filter?
Usually this is a sticking fuel metering valve or governor in the injector pump. About 1L of ATF in the fuel tank fixed the problem for me (twice).
Typical symptoms are stalling when letting off the throttle at, or above 1500 RPM.
Usually restarts and idles fine, and has good power but can sometimes hesitate or surge.
diesel kleen is what you should use in the filter or tank, i don't use ATF because my truck is worked on a farm and in the country where fuel checks can take place.... they can take place anywhere though even in cities. and guess what color ATF is.... RED and guess what color farm diesel is RED. guess what happens when your fuel gets pulled and it comes out RED..... would be a pain trying to get the officer to believe that is ATF in there. fine is by the gallon in missouri i believe and wouldn't see it being any different in any other state but ya never know.
