hey guys I got a few hoses that lead to no where I hope some of you can help I will try to describe where they are comming from. first on my motor a 460 there is some kind of shiny valve looking thing directly behind the carb with a hose connected to nothing the valve thing is not attached to the carb but directly behind it on the intake manifold next is on the c6 transmission directly behind the tranny on the right side there is another shiny valve thing with a hose connected to nothing when I pulled the hose off accidently some oil dripped out there is no clamp to hold the hose on, should there be and where am I supposed to connect this hose or is it just a breather? well thanks for any advice
ok after a little research Ive determind that the thing on the transmission is in fact a vacuum diaphram so now I just need to know what it hooks into? I think the thing on the manifold is also a vacuum diaphram I don't know how my truck even works with all this stuff disconnected
It sounds like the thing on the back of the manifold is an EGR valve, not sure though. Can you get some pics? I don't know about the things on the tranny.
yes it is the EGR however it doesnt appear to be hooked up or even working I would like to hook it up properly can you tell me what it hooks in to? there is a hose running off of it and a fitting on the end of the hose like a splice or coupling but its not hooked into anything. the thing on the trans is the vacuum modulator and from what Ive read its busted because oil came out after I pulled the hose off, thanks for the reply D24x4
The EGR valve is sourced from ported vacuum, through a ported vacuum switch (PVS). The PVS is usually found in the thermostat housing or the intake manifold, depending on the motor. The PVS is an open switch when the engine temperature is above a certain temperature, and closed for temperatures below that. My '79 originally had a vacuum tee upstream of the EGR valve, most likely like the one you're seeing, and I believe it ran to the purge valve on the charcoal canister. I believe there were some more complicated setups used throughout the years, but simple ported vacuum through a PVS and then to the EGR valve is the most basic setup and should get the job done.
The vacuum modulator on the transmission runs to manifold vacuum, with nothing in between. There should be a vacuum tree on your intake or firewall with several fittings; one of them runs to the modulator. If transmission fluid came out of the vacuum hose when you removed it from the modulator, then you must replace the modulator.
Typically, there are no hose clamps for the smaller 3/16 and 1/4 inch vacuum hoses - they usually are press-fit. The "tension" created by the barb at the end of the fitting is usually enough to hold the hose in place. So no, there's no hose clamp for the small hose that runs to the modulator on the transmission.
