Question Probably a dumb question....

Anyone have a trick to jack the rear end of your truck up safely (96 f-150 with 6inch lift) not by the axle? I need to remove the ubolts and pull the axle but i can't lift the rear end up. I have a 3 ton floor jack and lots of jack stands but their not high enough to reach the frame or hitch. How do you guys do it? Thanks for the help guys

Not saying its the best, or safest way, but a couple years ago when I was looking to raise up some jack stands so they'd reach the frame of my truck I made up some blocks. I took a 4x4 and cut it into some 12 inch sections and some 18 inch sections. They have all sorts of uses like chocking tires and stacking under jack stands. On the few occasions I've had to get the truck higher than the jack will reach, you can put them under the jack as well, but it doesn't work great because jacks roll a little bit as you jack up the vehicle. If I only need like another 3 inches, I put the block between the jack and the vehicle (lying flat, NOT standing up!)

Use the tow hitch. They can make a decent jack point that is lower than the frame. I believe thats what I did to swap the springs this summer, with the block on the jack. Also, jack up the axle, remove the tires, and drop it back down onto some stands (I wouldn't rest the axle on the drums though). That should gain you a good amount, especially if you have tall tires.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about cutting up some 4x's of maybe some 2x8's and laying them flat under my jack. Taking the tires off first is a good idea. I was also thinking about buying a hilift jack soon anyways so i guess i could use that then just block under my jack stands. Sure would be nice to have a lift right about now..... Thanks for the help.

Jack it up using the axle, then put the blocking or jack stands under the frame....

i have a lift on my truck and the only way i can jack it up with 2x8s.
I cut pieces of 2x8s and nailed 4 pieces together so I had a 8x8 block. I put the jacks/stands on the blocks

Gotta love cheap solutions. Probably my best option. I dont think my stands will reach the frame even with with the tires off. Need to be able to get the axle all the way off.

Just to add, whatever you do, be careful. Check every now and then to make sure things are still sitting right. And watch out if you really push or pull on anything, the last thing you want to do is pull it off the stands.

Also make sure you chock front and back of the front wheels to keep it from rolling either way. If you need to use more than one block high, alternate the direction to keep it stable.

Custom stands and engine hoist set at heaviest setting worked well for me. A bit hack of a way to go, but it was what I had to work with at the time.
