My truck has about 300k on it I'm changing my oil in less then 100 miles from now and I'm qt low I was reading some place if you add ATF in you engine it will clean the engine from all the gunk .should I due it is it safe ??? Please let me know or what should I use .I run shell oil in it since day one
iv heard of this alot atf has alot of detergents in it and will help thin the oil i would say when adding to 16 qts its safe, but i have never done it if you feel the need to try to get your engine extra clean use a full can of sea foam in the oil for 50 miles or so, or go to your local auto parts store and look for a engine flush. if you feel your engine is dirty use a good oil filter not a cheapo fram i say wix/napa gold same filter and change your early real early once or twice my .02
I might try it with a standard engine but CERTAINLY not on a HEUI engine. BTW Diesel oil has large amounts of detergents in it anyway and diesel engines are much cleaner than gas engine on the inside. I have never seen any gunk or build up on the inside of a diesel engine.
seafoam and products like that are designed for cleaning sludge.
however on gas engines, i have used the atf trick to clean sticking lifters.
prolonging a teardown and replacement of lifters, etc. for thousands of miles.
i have also used stp in a standard transmission to prolong a bearing replacement.
in all cases, all these methods do, is postpone required repairs.
When I got my other 97 with 200k on it.my uncle died and didn't drive it for 5 or 6 years I filled up both tanks with fresh fuel I put a gallon on atf in each tank.I was huge difference on milage a just ran great. Now I do it one a month or so in all my trucks my fuel system lookks like brand new
You can run straight atf so a gallon wont hurt anything. Only thing id worry about with that much atf is dying the fuel red. A trooper pulls you over and dips the tank you may have issues
