ATF blend in MT?

I had the 5 speed in my 99 F-150 rebuilt and the transmission shop filled it with a blend of ATF and gear oil. Has anyone ever heard of this? What should I replace it with? Should I go back to all ATF? I'm thinking about putting synth ATF in for a little extra protection. I don't want to have to replace any more syncros!

Peas out.

I would go back to ATF ASAP, because the gear oil will attack yellow metals and wont work good with the syncros. I believe it is all the sulfer and phosphorus in the gear oil that makes it corrosive.

Hey Peas,
I second the above. From all I have heard and read, you for-sure want to use ATF (Mercon if memory serves me well) in the M5OD, and I am assuming that is the 5-speed you are refering to.

Here's a link to a post that might be helpful as you go about changing the fluid:

Gear oil corrodes brass (yellow metal)? You would think the guys at the tranny shop would know that, huh? Yeah, M5OD.

Some do, some don't.

Just depends on what kind. Some are friendly towards yellow metals, others aren't.

As mentioned, gear oil should not be used in an application that calls for ATF. It will work...but not nearly as well as with using ATF as it was designed for.

Somebody, I can't remember who it was, mentioned using like Honda motorcycle MT fluid. Talking about the low lubricity of the ATF so that the auto can actually grab gears...and with a MT you want it to be highly lubricative due to the nature of the transmission. The Honda fluids had all the right modifiers and additives for use, and his transmission shifted fantastically. I ought to go dig him up....

There are yellow-friendly gear oils out there. But..if your transmission shop blended ATF and gear oil together in a transmission designed for ATF, then they obviously wouldn't be smart enough to use a yellow-friendly, eh?

I wouldn't go back to them...lol. Makes you wonder what else they might do wrong, ya know? We'll never be going back to the place that did our Suburban's transmissions...we ended up having two more put in on warranty by them - you can't say that is simply coincidence. Especially one going out in the period of a month.

Yeah, I pretty much won't go back. They drug their feet on finishing the job, the guy that took the tranny down was not the same guy that put it back in. They didn't get the shift boot put back together correctly, left the clutch inspection cover off... just a nightmare. I was immediately suspicious, and freaked when I smelled the sulphur smell from the gear oil. Not the kind of customer satisfaction I like to have when I break off $1700 for a job, know whumsayin'?

1700 dollars for what? That much for a manual transmission rebuild? Wow...

Third gear, all syncros (supposedly), clutch, pressure plate, t/o bearing, labor, fluids, shop supplies, disposal fees, sales tax, KY jelly...

It would not be a bad idea to go with a Syn ATF. I did that with my T-Bird that has a stick. It definitely made shifting on cold winter mornings easier. Not as stiff.

Okay, thanks, that's not what I really need to hear right now. I doubt my transmission is *ruined*, but I am disappointed with the service I received from the rebuilder. I changed the fluid, replaced it with generic ATF, and I'm going to drain it again and refill with a synthetic ATF. My truck is my sole form of motorized transportation, and i plan on keeping it (I've got too much $ tied up). It shifts fine, (the syncros grab like they're supposed to). Gear oil may corrode brass, but I doubt it has deteriorated the syncros THAT much; as I say, it shifts like a champ...
As to whether $1700 dollars was to much to pay for a rebuild: I don't know, I live in the most densely populated area in Florida and ***** is expensive down here, true that.

Saurian, it was "Beemer nut" that did some research and came up with Honda's racing motorcycle transmission fluid, (manual transmissions). I installed it years ago in a Montero SUV 5-speed that specs for ATF, also in a 95 Disco Rover with ZF 5-speed also specs ATF. Notchy shifting gone and the synchros still grab for clean shifts and bearing life is extended. It has anti-wear, high shear (impact protection), gear face protection, anti-foam and oxidation protection. Has no sulphur smell. As i'm a licensed A&P im critical on oils and products. Carl. .................o&o>............................. ...

hey Pass The Peas, the other day at my local parts store i ran across Redline MTF (manual trans fluid). It's safe to use on brass synchros and a viscosity of 20 wt. (shake test) at room temp. Claims to lube everything but had additives for good synchro action. This may be worth a lookie, Carl.........................o&o>................. ..

Yeah, I may look into that. I'm not very pleased with the shift feel of straight atf, I can actually tell a difference since I changed the fluid. It doesn't feel as "crisp".
