i was beating on my truck a little today, and at a stop light it started to shake at idle and make a strange popping and rattling noise when i reved it. this lasted about a minute and then went away after i started driving. to be honest, i thought i blew the thing up. but my temp stayed cool and my oil pressure didnt change at all. however, i have had an exhaust leak coming from the manifold for a while now, so i am thinking that my intake/exhaust manifold is bad and caused the temporary shaking. any other ideas? truck in sig.
btw ive done the "6 litre" tune up, and cleaned throttle body, replaced throttle body gasket, replaced 02 sensor, etc
Seeing how the problem turned up after aggressive driving, I think it could be pre-detonation.
With the "6 litre" tuneup, you advance the timing quite a bit. What is your timing set at? Was the popping and pinging real pinging (knock)? When the engine is pre-detonating, it's going to run rough and you're going to hear a knocking/pinging sound (hence its names).
What grade of fuel are you running? I would try running a higher octane fuel through the system and try to reproduce the situation. If it doesn't occur, it's probably a ping problem.
If the above solves your problem, but you would like to run a lower grade fuel, try seafoaming the engine once or twice. Carbon deposits can really hold heat which will detonate the fuel before the spark plug fires.
i dont know what my timing is set at. it really sounded like the engine was knocking and pinging severely, but like i said it did not last long. i actually filled the truck with super and did not have the problem again. although as soon as i went back to regular, my mpgs have suffered, but i havent gotten any pinging. i will pick up a bottle of seafoam today and see if that works out. the truck was last seafoamed a few months ago.
