I have found several threads about changing the pump on my 03. Does anyone have experience with the cheap 50-70 dollar ones from e-bay? I am not looking forward to the $200+ route.

I'm fairly certain that those are just a universal pump/motor and it's not the complete fuel pump assembly like you'd get at the dealer or auto parts stores.
Yes, they are just the pump. I would have to put it into the assembly. and install the original assembly. but the rest of the assembly should be ok. And the check valve is inside the pump, and at about 1/4 to 1/3 the cost.
I would be careful. Make sure that the pump is built/made by a reputable company. Sometimes those cheap pumps do not last and you will have to do it again and fork out more money. Buy one with a lifetime warranty. You only want to change one of those once and if you have to change it again, at least have a warranty so it won't cost you more money. You will pay a few dollars more for one but it is worth it. Also, what do you do if you have a problem with it. Will the seller work with you to help you out. Good chance you will be SOL. That is my experience with parts like this. It might be worth it to spend a few dollars more now to save a headache later.
I will check rock auto.
One more questions, the pump works fine, it is the check valve that is bleeding off the pressure so it has a hard time starting. I have found no other options, except to change the pump, is that correct? too bad there is not a check valve that could be added to the fuel line...

I am pretty wary of adding things like that into the fuel system but if you do, I suggest using nylon ferrells and not the brass. I have found that brass does not always seal as it should and a fuel leak is a bad thig.
I would also check Amazon for your pump. I have found parts on Amazon that are cheaper than Rock Auto and any other chain store. Best thing about Amazon is free shipping(most of the time) and no sales tax!!! I would have to suggest that as much as you have been messing with this and toying with the idea of an inline check valve, just replace the assembly. Don't mess with an inline valve, if it fails, than you are back at square one, plus you are compromising the integrity of the fuel system by doing that. A leak means money down the drain and maybe a KABOOM!!! Don't mess with it. Replace it and call it good. Who has diagnosed it saying it is fuel leaking backwards???
I was having a missing issue, and this starting issue, so before spending a lot throwing parts at it I took it to ford. Had 3 bad coils, changed them all, now runs great.
Has had the start issue for 1-2 years. and have been told it is the pump. Also the testing shows the injectors are not having any problems.
If I change the whole module, is there a process to set up the fuel gauge, or is it preset?
No. Just remove old, drop in new. Make sure you have the module seated right in the fuel tank. Do it when the tank is near empty if you don't have a way to siphon gas out.
