Full Size Beds?

Doesn't anyone use a full size bed anymore?

I am looking into trading my '10 F250 SC XLT 4x4 WITH a 8ft bed and did a live search via Fords website within a 100 mile radius. There are exactly 2 F250's with 172" wb out of hundreds of trucks. 95% are Crew Cab 4x4s (which is what I want), yet they are all 156" wb. I can't believe that no one wants/needs a full size truck anymore. WTF?

You cant get the 4x4's in most places as it is already with clearance issues. Muchless something thats a extra 2feet long.

Theres many many places i go and my shortbed sticks out ALOT to where i feel uncomfortable.

Most people who get the longbeds use them for work. Goto a truck only dealer and you should be able to get you a longbed.

Problem it sounds like your having is most people who get longbeds tow 5th wheels now days it seems. And 99% of the people out there pay the extra $300 or so to get a 350 over a 250.

Too many soccer moms driving these trucks. Not Guys using them for HAULING. Pretty soon you wouldnt be able to get a 8' bed, just like you cant buy a manual truck

We don't need a longbed to pull a 5th wheel anymore, they make the front of the trailer so we can cut sharp. Plus I preffer the look of a short bed myself.

Not just for a 5th wheel, actually more for the ability to chuck plywood sheets in AND still be able to close the gate. Even when I have a full size toolbox mounted in the front, I still have a 6ft bed. Just a much ore useful truck bed.

Dude, the Torqshifts are so much better than a manual its scary. With the SelectShift stuff as the future, you can have all the "manual control" of choosing when to shift combined with shift speed of an automatic. I had two manual trucks, and then a Torqshift, and it's night and day. No more burning the clutch in the granny gear to get 14,000lbs moving, just push the skinny pedal and the truck does the rest. Between the up-and-coming SelectShift type automatics and double overdrive being made available, plus 400+HP diesels with 800 ft-lbs of torque, there's just no NEED for a manual anymore.

You guys are forgetting two very important things here. 1) Trucks on most dealership lots are "pretty trucks." If you want a commercial truck, go to a Ford dealer that sells commercial trucks. Forget just 8" beds, get a 9.5" bed. Get an F-550 with a high-deflection package and tow as much as an '88 Freightliner. Get rid of every creature comfort you can imagine, and get that stripped down F250 you've been craving. Or get a cab/chassis 350 dually with Lariat leather. You can order almost anything through a commercial house. 2) Options sell. I know a lot of rodeo people and cotton farmers who buy King Ranch and Lariat level trucks, then beat the life out of them. They want the toys that come with the higher trims, and they pay for them. There's no "soccer mom" driving a CC/SB truck towing a 40' gooseneck loaded with steers.

JH: I feel you bud. I've been looking for a 2011 F-150 XLT 4x4, and every single one on every lot in Dallas has the ~$1,500 chrome package upgrade. I think the chrome clad wheels look like crap, and I refused to pay for them, or the other crap that comes with the XLT upgrade packages. That's why I still have a 2009 Hyundai Accent with 28,000 miles on it, because I haven't found a low-end XLT level truck yet. But sometime in the next year, it'll happen. Until then I'll wave goodbye to my 250 for my 75 mile daily commute, and wish I had an F150 to park by my '07.

I agree on the chrome package. Its God ugly.

As far as the torqueshift. Great transmission. HORRABLE programing.

There are still things a manual can do that an automatic cannot. I'll keep my handshaker (apparently forever now... this appears to be the last pickup I'll ever own unless good transmissions become available again)

To the OP.

Are you ONLY looking at wheelbases? What are the chances that some of those pickups have regular bed, but a cab and a half instead of a double? For instance, I have a 137" wheelbase and a regular bed. Is a double-cab a requirement for you?

As I said, the vast majority are Crew Cabs which is what I want. The majority are also dealer ordered as Lariats. If you go to any Ford dealers website, you can now pull up the exact window sticker of the vehicle.

A 172" wheelbase is a F250/350 Crew Cab with a full size (8ft) bed.

I my last 2 trucks have been short beds and I'll probably never go back as long as I drive crew cabs. It's a lot easier to drive around town. When I need to haul big stuff, I just hook up a trailer.

i have a 03 crew cab short box, and there's days i wish i had an 8ft bed. but i do have a friend that has the same truck with the 8ft box and his is a bear to try and park anywhere let alone turn around. i don't mind the walk since i usually park in the back 40 anyways
