Great forum! I've enjoyed reading up on all the topics.
Here's my deal.
I'm a recent convert to the Ford Family. Grew up GM, but have seen the light.
I had a company F150 that ran to 200k with little problems. Even though it wasn't technically mine, it is now my favorite of all the vehicles I've ever owned. Now my wife has an '08 Edge and I'm driving her 'hand me down' '06 Escape. I now longer need to the fuel economy of the Escape (after the company truck had to be turned back to the lease company I had to drive a car that got a certain MPG, i.e. the Escape) so I'd like to get back into an F150!
Pretty much set on the 04-08 Generation.
My question is this........
Can I expect the same longevity out of a non-highway driven F150 that I did out of my traveling salesman truck?
Anything to look for on this generation? Any common problems other than the spark plug trouble?
Welcome to the forum!
I will give my .02 here....I bought a 97 F-150XL from a relative quite a number of years back.At that time it had around 120,000 showing. It was the 4.2 V-6,LWB Automatic.Other than routine maintenance,it never let me down.I traded her in at 196,000 miles on an 07 with the same exact trim level, and powertrain.
Needless to say economy isnt gonna be great in any full size truck, but on both the 97,and 07 Ive been able to average around 18-19 MPG driving like the old fart I am.
I threw more crap at the 97 than it was EVER designed to haul.
I fully expect the 07 will be my last "newer" truck, and figure it will be around long after retirement rears its ugly head.
From what I understand, the 4.2,s did not have the spark plug issues that the V-8,s have(had).
IF you plan on doing any major towing however...the 4.2 is NOT the engine you want.
I bought this truck and said that I wont buy another truck until this one dies. I have had it for almost 6 years now and haven't had a problem although I have only put 60k miles on it which is nothing compared to some of the other guys on here. With that said I do plow with this truck which is pretty hard on the truck and it hasn't gone wrong.
I bought my truck two years ago and plan to keep it another 6-8 before buying another one. You should have no problems with it lasting a long time as long as the routine maintenance is kept up to date.
I've had mine for 6 years! And trust me I've put it through hell...luckily when I was 18 my credit passed for this truck so it got the terror of "mudding" and "sand dune running" and all that fun stuff through my teen years....its been nothing but the best truck I've ever been in. My friends and I are divided between brands perfectly. All of us bought 04' models (RAM,TUNDRA,TITAN,1500SIERRA,1500SILVERADO,and one Ridgeline..if you count that) the Titan and I are the only ones left. All the other guys sold it due to mechanical problems like trans, eng block (tundra). My truck now has 130k on the clock and its running strong. I broke cylinder 8 in the head and had to remove the valve cover to get out..other than that....FLAWLESS. But then again I haven't missed a SINGLE service by more than 10mi. Mostly because I do them all myself. The only thing I haven't done is a "de-carb" because I've heard too much controversy over it.
