I'm, not sure if anything special was done to make it pass without the cats. Like I said, I bought it at a dealer, took it to the test facility, and $20 later drove out with the slip that said "PASS". I didn't even realize until later that the cats were gone. Maybe the Acura fails because it's an Acura?
Right now i'm running with no muffler, but a turndown coming out of the cats. It's definately louder when you really get on the gas, but i would have to say it's a bit RASPY. Like everybody says the exhaust does come back in sometimes when i have the back window down.
I did have it exit infront of the rear tires, but because i was using clamps and it wasn't welded together the side pipe kept drooping. I then just put a turndown on instead. This is just temporary.
I'm eventually planning on putting a flowmaster system on with maybe some high-flow cats. I'm hoping that it will give me a more mellow (but still loud) sound.
Personally i would say keep your muffler, but install a high flow cat.
Does anybody know the rules regarding replacing cats in NJ?
I'm not sure if it's standard everywhere, but I know here the truck has to have 50,000 miles on it or there has to be something wrong with the cat before you are allowed to install an aftermarket cat.
If you are still wondering about the side exit exhaust, I have a response. I had the muffler removed when I was going to get exaust done, in the spur of the moment I asked them if I could run it out the side, with a Turbo Muffler. The turbo did not fit if I wanted to run it out the side, so I left the muffler off. It sounds great excpet in cold or really wet weather. Right after you start it, within the next thirty seconds, if you get the RPMs up above 1500 and let off the gas, she will backfire like no one's business. Other than that, no complaints. It sound tight, looks great, and gets out some attention.. You know.

i had just my cat for a while, its loud, but not rediculous. i have the 302 in mine as well, and i like the sound of it. then i had straight headers (stock manifolds) for a while, but got tired of it. so i recently put it all back on. before i did though, i had my buddy take a screw driver and nock all the **** out of the cat. then we welded it back into y system, so i LOOKS like i have one.

85 Bronco 300-6, single glass-pack, turned out in front of right rear. Thrilled w/ the sound. Occasional fumes nothin too bad. Sounds great, lots of friendly comments like-"That 300 sounds pretty good!". I love hearing that from someone smart enough to know what a 6 sounds like, when they only know what it is by the sound of it.
86 Bronco, 351W, 4v, "true" duals off of stock manifolds, thrush glass packs, turned out behind the rear tires. Sounds great, again occasional fumes nothing major, not necessarily quiet, definitely LOUD if you put your foot in it.
