OnBoard compressors

Okay,

More and more I'm wishing I had a compressor on the truck. Not some cheesy plug in the dash thing, but a real air compressor with tank something like this from VIAIR.

Anyone have any experience with one or these, good or bad? Looks like there is plenty of room under the bed around the frame rails for mounting. Here's somebody's eBay suggestion.

Viair is good, I had one. Spend more money and get a 100% duty cycle with at least a 3 gallon tank though. I had a 200psi, 100% duty 480c with a 9 gallon tank on my last truck that worked good.

Is the dual compressor setup worth the $$$? Would a 100% duty-cycle compressor be enough for most users?

Viair looks good because of the "package" - I did buy one for a friends hunting rig but we haven't installed it. I personally have been looking at the Extreme Air that RifraffDiesel has listed..

When I had a thread about these - Clay at Riffraff (i think he's a sponsor here) linked me up to it..

Riffraff Diesel: ExtremeAire 12 volt Compressor

If Moneys no object - Look into Oasis -3000/4000 They are BADA$$!!!

I would like to have an ExtremeAire and look at mounting options. There have been plenty of times I could have used this tool.

Me tool... Except now I am complicating it -- I want to mount another Deep cycle battery on the frame plus the 3-5gal air tank, extremeair, etc...

Before I put the ranch hand on - I used to always weld up my own bumpers and always figured to "plumb" either the front or back to use as the air tank.. I could probably plumb the ranch hand if their welds are good but it is only 4" pipe & I always used 5" Sch 40 in 1 continuos run - about 6' length - Figure about 1 gal/ft - 6 gal tank...

Check out this puma compressor on e-bay the item number is 190484731988 it is only $229.95 and it is way heavy duty, this is the one I have had on my truck for a couple of years now and it works great. I also have a 10 gal tank mounted under the bed I got from harbor freight for 30 bucks and a 50 foot hose reel in the bed. I can run air jacks and impact wrenches and you can lay on the air horns as long as you want when someone pisses you off [not that I do that as that would be juvenile] and it works great for the air bags and tires. I also welded an extra battery tray together and bolted it to the outside of the frame on the passenger side and put a 1000 amp battery there it is a bitch to get to but I can run all my inverters and compressor on it and not worry about capacity. I ran some #2 wire up the main battery and tied it in and put a 100 amp breaker on each end of the cables so it charges with the main batt off of the alternator. P.S. the puma compressor comes with the pressure regulator on off switch like a full size compressor.

When I had my 04 CC I had installed the Viair kit with a 3g tank, I mounted the compressor in a large tuperware container on the frame under the cab. I extended the breather to the engine compartment. The 3g tank was mounted along the frame as well and ran 2 air lines one to the front and one to the rear. Also had a set of grover emergency tone air horns running off the system. It always ran perfect, mainly used it for inflating tires on our jeeps when off roading. I only wish I had time to pull it off the truck before I sold it. Looking to do another simular set up again. I had ordered the last one from airhorns of Texas.

I had a Firestone full-duty cycle on my last truck with a 1-gallon tank and airbags. It worked great, but I'm going to go for a larger system this time around (and without airbags). I think the onboard air is one of the best accessories to add, and much better than a portable system.

I would second the votes for an ExtremeAire compressor. They are a bit pricey, but they have a pretty solid history & following in the four-wheeling communities.

Oasis is the only way to go if you are serious going to use the system, pricey....YES, but well worth it if you are going to rely on that air system. Here's pics of my setup with a 3rd gel deep cycle battery mounted to the frame, don't forget a battery isolator, I put an auto isolator in. Also might want to plumb using d.o.t. air lines, been in -29 weather and no issues.

5 gal tank

Air intake routed to inside cab

3rd ba

junction blocks

isolator

quick connect at front bumper

quick connect @ rear bumper

Xmember mount for Oasis

Oasis/ splash shield

regulator/ filter

Oasis

Oasis

tank, etc.

splash shield

Don't forget the K5LA train horns........

Oasis are 100% duty cycle at 200psi, it is basically an EDC York compressor mounted to a serious elect. motor. Utility company vehicles and military use these. Well worth the $ if you are going to use it.

Alright, well just 1 more from my recent hunting trip.......aired down to 25 psi and was doing fine with the new MT's but started to run into drifts that were 6' high so we chained up all 4 just to be on the safe side. After a succesful hunt and we returned to the maintained road I fired up the Oasis in -29 weather and filled up the 37's to 60 psi with no issues and didn't take but 10 minutes to do it, although I did have to break out the mapp torch to get the ice off the quick connects.

fresh tracks

Rotun-nice setup, is that a battery kit you can get for the extra battery or did you put that together from off the shelf?
