I know this has been discussed before, the turbo cold start up noise, but the sound I am getting seems to be coming from under the truck, on the passanger side, perhaps at the start of the exhaust system or very close to the engine. It starts of fairly loud with a pewwwww........ pewwwww sounds then gradually gets lower with the same sound and it only lasts for less than a minute. The truck runs great other than this little sound.

Any thoughts?
My truck makes a few different sounds during the first 5 minutes. I have a slight turbo whine and some other sounds similar to what you are describing. I have given up trying to figure out all the sounds. It was driving me batty. Like the ones when you open the doors.
I have had my truck for a week now. I can't keep up with the sounds it makes on a cold start first thing in the morning. One for sure, is the turbo the first couple of minutes of running.
And download the Coffee Table book and the 6.7 Overview you can find a picture cut-a-way of the DEF can on the exhaust system. It has a screw looking agitator and I wonder if it spins because I hear the same sound and I think that it has something to do with the DEF system. I don't know for sure though....
It's page 85 and 86 in the Overview book. I can't tell if the thing twists or not, it might just be stationary and we are hearing the pumps or something else.

Reason: Overview Book
My truck is only two weeks old and just started a whining sound. This started a couple days ago. The sound oscillates from a high pitch to a lower pitch whine. This only happens on a cold start first thing in the morning.
The weather has been colder (lows in the 20'sF the last couple days compared to when I first brought the truck home. After a couple minutes, no whining sounds.
Mine has been doing that from day one. It does oscillate and slowly goes away. Kinda a weird sound cant quite describe it. Like a liquid going through a restriction. Or say a water hose that you compress the tube and then slowly let up.
Turbo whine. New type of turbo for the 6.7. I think they all do it.
Not sure if it is a turbo whine as the turbo is on top (is it not?) and the sound is coming from under the engine along the exhaust piping/DPF area but seems to be closer to the engine

Same here. I was thinking it was a fuel pump initially, but going the opposite direction, engine to fuel tank. the oscillating high to low whine sound is strange to me.

I think we are all talking about the same turbo noise. If I go to the exhaust pipes while it is doing this, it sounds like it is coming out of there as well. It lasts 1 to 2 minutes and goes lower in pitch. Then another minute or so, it is gone.

This is exactly what I hear on cold morning start-ups. In fact, I replied to a thread regarding this earlier today and said
"My F-250 SRW has about 2200 miles on it, but I've always heard what I am about to describe. I bought my truck with 22 miles on it. On cold mornings, like this morning (28 degrees), and only at start up, mine makes an almost beeping type of noise, with the sounds fading to nothing. It reminds me of a tractor's reverse beeping or humming sound. It does it maybe 5 or 6 times, this beeping type of sound, then stops. I don't hear this on warmer mornings or afternoons after it's been sitting for several hours. I read the posts about the turbo replacement, and also listened to the video. Mine isn't like that at all. I even tried giving it some throttle when it does it on these cold morning start ups, but it still goes away after 5 or 6 beeps or short hums. I don't notice any of it while driving, only the normal low almost quiet turbo spin-up noise when I goose it or am pulling a load."
Sorry, I wish I knew how to just link to this post.
I recorded a minute of audio on my start up this morning. It was 30F. I can email the audio from my BlackBerry if anyone is that curious and probably could even post it here if I knew how.
EDIT: I made a YouTube video capturing the audio of the cold start. I added a picture slide show trying not to be a blank screen of the audio track. Anyway, here is the link to the YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waWpkUQG5C0
