As I remember it, trucks were not really a big part of the hot rod scene in the 50s, but they have become much more popular as the old tin dwindles. The few I remember had wide whites, painted deep dish wheels (usually red, and all four the same size...no bigs and littles yet) and no hubcaps, or full wheel hubcaps (Caddy hubcaps were a favorite). A lot of them were in grey primer. That's about all I remember.
Take a close look at my gallery "Before" picture. My F100 was modified in 1956 by a Ford dealer in Colorado. The modifications included louvered hood, chrome reverse wheels, dropped front axle, heated and bent rear springs, side pipes routed up along the top rails on the box and two tone paint job. The story goes that the dealer sold lots of special packages each year and called them the Bob Jones Ford Skyland Special.
Ranger Pat, I saw your truck at that employee gathering where the pic was taken. I was looking for a 56 at the time, so I chased your name down and contacted you later. You were not interested in selling. Later I bought a yellow big window in So Cal, gallery to follow someday.
those are off my 53 Olds, i've been thinking about spots, white tuck and roll, white tonneau (?), but that will have to come later after I fix the cracked block.......
Thanks guys, I'm doing a frame off restoration of a 51 f1 . Getting ready to paint in the spring and just looking for something different. I want to stay with the stock look. I put a merc. eugine in it ,headers and a three speed top loader trans. I like the flat paint look. Gary
Like ranger pat said you have to have the pipes run up along the bed. Thats old school right there. They sometimes ran a white button on bed cover. They were always shop trucks so a name on the side is very necessary From the books I've read there was a not sure what exact year it was but was a 48-52 style that was chopped shaved had a kaiser grill I believe, It also wore skirts and had caddy somberro caps on wide whites looked classy.
Anyways good luck and its nice to see some 50's style trucks!
