i have a 99 F250 and a few weeks ago it started shutting off while i was driving. i was told to try changing my cam sensor and i did. now, after i changed the sensor their is a loud grinding/knocking noise. i had it towed to a shop and they said my sensor is fine its the torque converter. i towed it to a transmission place and after replacing the torque converter the noise is still there. and the transmission place thinks its coming from my engine. anyone know what it could be?
did they change the flex plate? a cracked flex plate will make some horrendous noises. did you reuse the same CPS mounting bolt? just a shot in the dark but could it be rubbing or hitting something inside the front cover?
Barney just stated what I was going to say.
Flex plate will make some horrible rattling noises at idle.
I don't know that you would be able to hear a CPS grinding itself away on the camshaft and still run, but anything's possible for a short time.
I'm with Jim. Seems like there was another thread not too long ago with similar issues. Just changed the CPS and had a bad rattle. I don't think they ever came back with a fix, but I'd guess it's an aftermarket CPS and it's affected the timing which is changing the combustion characteristics and sounding like a bunch of marbles in a coffee can.
the first shop checked my cam sensor and said they liked it and it isnt one of the problem after market ones. but thats the first i have heard of the plate. thanks alot and i will tell them to check it. and i did use the same mounting bolt that was on the old sensor. and the marbles in a coffee can sounds exactly like what i hear.
I would hope a tranny shop that changed a torque converter would also be able to diagnose a cracked flex plate if that was the issue, but I guess you never know.
