Coolant Temperature Sensor. please help with part #
I need a part number for the coolant temperature sensor for my 2000 F250 7.3L. The parts store keeps giving me the wrong one, and I am tired of making the 45 mile round trip, and installation, just to get another wrong one. So far, they have given me master pro 2-9371 and borg warner wt3058, and they are both wrong. The plugs fit, but the gage doesn't register. Please, if anybody has a part number for one that is correct, I will get it.
Background: Everything worked fine, but I changed the water pump, hoses, thermostat, etc.. for preventative maintenance. The old sensor was dropped on the ground and broke the plastic top. The old sensor still works fine using temporary wire clips, but the new ones always show stone cold. I put the sensors into a bowl of water (being heated) to compare resistance at different water temps, and the resistance on the original sensor is very far off the resistance of the new ones. Since the sensors look exactly the same, I don't know how to get the correct resistance values unless somebody knowledgable can help me with a part #.
F5AZ12A648AB is the correct coolant temp sensor. You are more than likely being given the EOT sensor. Both thermistors, but with different resistance values. The F65Z100884AA is WRONG. Although plastic colors are not a reliable indicator, the gray sensor is the correct one. The correct sensor also has a tapered sensor on it, but I have seen EOT and ECT sensors with it. The EOT has an index mark further to the edge than the ECT. Good luck!
OK, one of the new sensors is black, and the other is gray. Both have tapered sensors. I'll see if the parts store can get a cross reference with that ford number.

Why not just order it from Ed? Looking at the price of $9.72 I think you have eaten that up in fuel by now, besides the OEM one will be correct!
This helps a great deal. I want to get one right away if possible since I won't drive my truck without the gage working. If I can't get the right 1 tomorrow, I'll order it from Ed. His price is cheap. I paid around $20 each for the wrong ones.
Heads up on part number F5AZ12A648AB. It has been superseded by part number 3F1Z12A648A per Ed's catalog.
Okay. yesterday I picked up a 3F1Z12A648A, but wrong part again. Dealer insisted that the correct listing was for F65Z100884AA. Although ya'all were telling me this is the wrong part, I was desperate for a solution, and told the dealer to order it for me. I picked it up today, and finally, I got the right part.
So, for my 2000 F250, the correct ECT sensor is F65Z100884AA, and the wrong one is 3F1Z12A648A. I don't know if there is a difference on other years, but at least I finally have a working gage again.
Sorry the part numbers didn't work! I am glad you got it fixed though, but I am curious on the part numbers now because I have twice had this issue with the numbers being to incorrect sensors on my truck, just recently went through it as well... At any rate, glad you got it fixed!
Typically a 12A648 is a coolant temp sensor but on the 7.3L the 12A648 is used for oil temp.
I should have checked for you, but everyone looked like they were all over it.
my bad.
Ed,
2002 F-250 7.3L
Ordered Part Number F65Z10884AA from dealership, sensor fits in hole (beside thermostat) but the plug does not because the tab on top of sensor plug does not match up with a slot on the wiring plug.
The part number on the old sensor I removed from the truck is 12A648-AA.
Because I needed to get the truck on the road, I ended up getting a part from O'Reilly (BWD WT3058).
This one did not have the tab on the sensor plug.
Coolant Temp Gauge is working now, but now I am confused as my case seems to be the opposite of what you have described.
Anybody have the correct # or know what auto store has the correct listing. I think i'm experiencing the same situation...dead cold "C", after 50 mile drive, or it rises a little, just to fall on its face.
.....for me, it was the 10884-AA p/n. Went to the first dealership only for them to have the same temp sensor for both location, the grey tab 12a648-AA, which had a plunger-like sensor feeler. The 10884-AA had the cone shape sensor feeler. Went to another dealership, same thing, until he went to the water-pump section, and noticed a "label" saying WATER TEMP, which also said, "black" connection. Went ahead hoping, and pulled trigger for 12 buks. part showed up 2-hrs later, installed over at buddys' place, and the trip home, dummy temp gauge, holding perfect. Before, darn needle would fluctuate from dead C to a tad above the first line....
I bought a cheap one once and it didn't work. When it comes to sensors use Ford stuff or it will fail prematurely. And RiffRaff's price is cheaper than the stealership.
