My wife did me a favor, she filled the truck with fuel!!! (about time she usually brings it back empty?) however she bought the Velaro fuel and now my 7.3 is a knocking and spewing out white smoke! I feel it is water in the fuel filter? I'm getting ready to go to the auto parts store to get replacement. My question is; sine I've never changed it myself before, I know I need a tool for the removal of the cap, but that's about all I know? any suggestions? And, should I drain the tank or just change the filter?

I hope it is just water and not gas mixed with diesel. Its easy to do if she doesn't fill it all the time. Open the drain on the fuel filter with a hose attached into a bottle and make sure it is water. If not dump the tank. I believe they use a oil filter wrench around the lid to loosen and put back on some else will chim in shortly i'm sure. They have a special wrench but it is unnecessary.
If you have the oem lid a oil filter (strap type) should easily take it off. If your filter was replaced w/ one that has the integral lid you'll need a wrench or socket to get it out. Watch the o-rings - lube them with fuel before installing them on the new filter. Hope it is just water in the fuel - gasoline + diesel engine usually = big $$ repair bill
Here is picture of the fuel bowl housing with the fuel drain handle in yellow.. to check for water in the fuel, 1st crawl under the front portion of the engine and you will see a steel line that ends.. attach a rubber or plastic hose to the end of this line .... put the other end in a glass jar. Then go top side and open the yellow handle on the fuel bowl until the jar in near full... Let it sit for a while and if you have water in the fuel, you will be able to see it.. Since the bowl in empty now, change the filter..
I would for sure check to see that gas wasn't put in. I did it once and my son did it another time. The gas actually goes to the bottom of the tank so it shows up quick. The gas and diesel don't mix much, they stay separated. Don't run it like that long or your injectors will be toast.
If you don't have a strap you can use channel locks and stick the handles in the lid on each side of it and use a screw driver in the jaws for leverage and it will come off.
I don't know if the water in fuel light would come on if gas was put in the tank.
If gasoline was interduced to your diesel tank and your wife filled it completly you need to get it out of the tank per the guys instructions above. A gallon or so they say no big deal but a full tankful isn't good at all.
