Head question

Hope you guys can help? I just bought a 70's? rebuilt head for my 85 300.
The head I bought has what looks like rods running through the exhaust port to support the exhaust valve. Can this be removed? It is an allen head style stud. It also looks like it would restrict exhaust flow.
Thanks for you info,
Brian

Hi Brian,
Would you be able to post a picture of what you mean? There's rods running through the exhaust port?

I'll get some pictures. When you look through the exhaust manifold port it looks like there are 2 valve stems. This is my 1st 300 but I've never seen anything similar to it before. The best I can make out is it looks like some kind of support.
Thanks for checking
Brian

I have pictures of the exhaust port but being the computer idiot that I am I can't get them to show up in this post. They are in my gallery, if anyone has the time to look and hopefully solve my dilemma.
Thanks,
Brian

If you go to manage your gallery under each picture there's a link that will open a pop-up window with the HTML code to paste into a post and show the picture.

I've tried that several times today, more than I can count and all I get is a red X. I could probably finish my truck faster than I could get pictures to post!

These?

Those look to be allen head plugs where the AIR injection tubes hooked up.

Thanks, showoff's! I pulled one of the allen heads today and the are just a plug blocking a tube. I'm going to pull a valve and look from that side. Do you know if those tubes are easily removable. The air injection makes sense .
Thanks,
Brian

Why don't you just pull a j.yard head and have it gone through, instead of trying to make that head something it is not?

To be honest, I don't know what the pipe is going through that chamber, I've never seen one like that. It could be the air injection from later on.
I imagine its' possible to remove it and work around it, but like F-250 said, I would agree that in the long run, if you're worried about flow, you'd spend less money going to a junk yard and getting a different year head that doesn't have it. I think my junk yard wants $30 for a head.

((Also, was just posting your pic above to help others see what you were referring to. ))

Problem solved, took the exhaust valves out today. They just push out once the set screws are removed. They sure look like air tubes, I forgot about all that so called 70's pollution crap!
Thanks for all your input,
Brian

Awesome!

Those poor exhaust ports. Already a restrictive design and now there's pipes running through them.

No kidding, they say stock heads are like running and breathing through a straw only with the tubes in place it's like running breathing through a straw with your thumb plugging the other end!
