2008 (built march 08) 6.4 xlt crew 4x4. 65000 miles..........
Is the fuels system desing on this truck crap? at 30,000 miles got a supposed bad tank of deisel. Had a slight amount of water in the tank. complete system replacement at 9000$. high pressure pump desintegrated. Insurance paid.
Now at 65k happened again. All fuel filter are oem and changed at every oil change by ford at 6k miles. Never have heard of this happening with anyother deisel but this 6.4. Own three dodges and one chevy diesel (my company). all are fueld at the same location normally. Now the truck is sitting at ford waiting on another adjuster. Looked at filters...clean, other than graphite (metal) from the pumps.
very bad design. how many of you have had this happen? how many more than once?
i drain the water out every week since the first issue (out of the seperator and it rarely has had any water in the bottle that i collect it in)
emberrasing ford put this engine in their trucks, filters dont do their jobs,
seems strange. most people that have this problem don't check the water trap, doesn't take very much to destroy hpfp. if you are draining the water trap every week this is an acute case of very watery fuel.
If u had an excess amt of water in the fuel system, would it not generate a water in fuel light?
what the OP said seems to ring true with the 6.4L, If enough water gets by the first flter to set off the warnng light, it's too late and there will most likely be major damage. If you read through the threads on this subject you will find that except in two notable exceptions the water will ruin the fuel system. There are 2 threads on here where the water was discovered qyickly because the trucks stalled. In both cases the tank and lines were drained and the truck was fine. I wonder if it's possible that the instruments Ford techs use to measure the damage are too finely tuned in that they have to return the truck to perfect where as you and I would be fine with returning it to a good running state. No knowledge, just wondering
That answers that. Thanks. We had one having issues. Ford put high psi pump on it. got it back, would not crank. Ford said it was the fuel. We cannot find anything wrong with the fuel and every truck gets fuel at the same place. It went back to Ford. They kept it inside and it cranked and said was fuel again. Again we get it back and it will not crank the next day. Ford suggested spraying wd-40 in the intake and see if it would crank....I kid u not. This time i notice it had no fuel pump buzz and tap it with a hammer and it cranks. We put a fuel pump/conditioner and so far it has cranked everytime.
Long story short, I wondered about the water in fuel sensor then. I lurk here and read about these so when he mentioned a similar situation, it made me ask. During this ordeal, we had drained and replaced fuel but it had not been help. When we replaced the low psi fuel pump, it was pretty nasty in there like dirt. Nothing like that came out of the tank though when we emptied it.

The sensor is a last chance to stop water. I try to drain once a week and I have had no problems. I have had WATER IN FUEL come on, stopped ,drained water and went on. DO NOt DRIVE with this on. If you drain drive and at first chance drain looking for water, I buy fuel one place so I have less chance of getting water.

I see what you're saying, but I believe this to be incorrect.
The water sensor is BEFORE the primary fuel filter in the HFCM. The primary filter has a water barrier around the filter element, and this is what separates water out from the fuel in the HFCM.
When this water gets to a certain point it will set the "water in fuel" light on the dash. This means your water separator is working!
I'll post diagrams when my internet connection starts cooperating...
