I'm with those who think the 6.0 gets a bad rep but have not had issues. Mine is also an early one, build date of June/03. Sure it runs a little rough when it's down to single digits
(unplugged) and I haven't run it for a week or more, but it runs fine once it warms up for a minute or two. I don't hot rod it and my mods are pretty pedestrian...

You are 100% correct, the thousands of people just like me that have had multiple failures with our 6.0L's are the exact people giving the 6.0L the rep it deserves. Curious looking at your wonderful sig you have addressed many of the KNOWN pattern failures of the 6.0L, why would that be if the engines are so great

My 2005 has been great. Most of the problems I've read about on forums seem to be tied to ignorance, lack of maintenance (that's ignorance, too), and using a tuner (gee, that's ignorance three).

So, congratulations to all 6.0 owners who thought idling for hours at a time, installing 40" tires and towing 15,000 lbs. on a tuner without replacing the gears in your diffs wouldn't hurt anything.

Let's not forget all the diesel engineers who run 15w-40 conventional oil in below freezing temperatures and bitch about starting problems.

Any reason why rev-x wouldn't be desired in a 6.4L? I might throw some in on the next (first for me) oil change.

My truck is new to me and I'm trying to do as much little stuff to help it along as I can. I plug in the block heater even though our winter nights are mostly in the 20's and rarely get down near 10F. I put Diesel Kleen every fill up. I fill up the tank between 1/2 and 1/4. So, the simple stuff. I'm not a gear head... some would say that I am "challenged" when it comes to internal combustion engines actually... and Diesels might put me well past the "challenged" mark

A coworker has an 05 Excursion 6.0. Only issues were early on with EGR valve failures. He unplugged it at 26,000 miles and now has 130,000 with no more EGR problems. Anyway, he was experiencing cold start issues last year. Started fine when using the block heater. It ended up being the FICM. Pricey, but he said it solved his cold start issues.

I Eat Hybrids: Thanks for the advice! I'll have to give the Rev-X a shot. I appreciate the help.

New to the diesel World and Im looking to purchase a DIesel truck. Is there any certain motor or transmission I should stay away from or model year? Im also looking at higher mileage trucks. One is a very clean 2500 HD with 295xxx miles for 8400? Would that be worth the buy or am i gambling? I know it depends on maintenance but like i said the vehicle was owned by a Koester office worker, just high miles

cold start problem

I had the same problem with my 6.0. It was a few bad glow plugs. If it runs good after it warms up that more than likely your issue. YouTube has some great videos on how to replace glow plugs on 6.0 powerstroke. I replaced the harness's as well. Driver side was easy, just take off the tire. Passenger side is a bit more work. You have to take off the tire and fender well on passenger side. Make sure you are careful not to break them off pulling harness off. Best to do so with motor warm. Once again, watch videos before you do this. Hope this information is helpful. Good luck.
