We're looking for an F350 4-door as our only vehicle. It will be our daily driver as well as the tow vehicle for an Airstream travel trailer (9800 pounds GVWR, 1000 pounds hitch weight). There will be a full-height cover on the bed, which will have 1500-2000 pounds of stuff in it. Most of what I'm seeing has the diesel engine, but some have gas. We're looking at 2013-2014 models, Lariat, King Ranch, or Platinum trims.
Some of these trucks have 150,000+ miles on them, which seems rather high to me. I understand that, generally, a diesel engine will have more miles in it than a gasser, but what's left? What's the general life expectancy for both the gas and diesel engines of this era?
Any vehicle can go 300k or more if maintained....thats the big question. As a general rule, if someone doesen't have reciepts, I don't believe them. I don't have the money to take the chance on a used diesel, but, one day, I may buy one brand new that has a full warranty. For now, I felt the extra outlay is best used for keeping the gas truck I have in top shape.
Any used vehicle is a gamble. If you buy from a dealer, I would get as much of a warranty as possible. You might even want to consider purchasing your own warranty from an outside company.
