91 F 250 4x4 u joint fix?

Hi my kid has a 1991 F250 4x4 with lockouts. Need to change the u joints in the front axle, how hard is this? I am a weekend warrior mechanic but have never tackled this before. Can we do it or should we conceded to a real mechanic?
The truck has 130,000 on a 460 CI automatic. Being young he is not concerned with mileage , plus it has a 6" lift and large wheels/tires.
How dependable are the engines/tranny's in these trucks?
He just got it and will be doing the general maintainence, anything else to do or get done when doing this?

Thanks
Robb

It's a good time to do wheel bearings, seals, ball joints, brakes, turning rotors, tie rod ends, lube hubs, etc etc. How in depth you want to go is up to you. At a minimum, pack the bearings, replace the seal, clean the brakes, and lube everything well.

Oh, and on a scale from 1-7, I'd give it a 3.

If you've ever done a wheel bearing it's not much more work.
Pull off lockout, remove brake caliper, remove hub, remove spindle, and pull out axle.
Shouldn't take an hour to take apart the first time.
Like zxwut said, check, then grease or replace other parts, while it's apart, especiallly the little spindle bearing in the back of hub behind the grease seal, not usually mentioned.
