Just done a headgasket job on my truck, and now my transmission will not change gears until 5000 RPM. Could this just be a major vac leak to the mod valve or have I left some linkage unhooked?

Are all the vac lines in the right places ?..Did you remove the kick down linkage ?
Since you were working around the vacuum line for the modulator valve, check to make sure it was reconnected on the intake. Also check the steel section of the line going to the valve, mine was rotten under one of the clamps that hold it to the transmission, the truck ran like crap and would not upshift into drive till 50mph .
I drove a C6 for over 100,000 miles without a kickdown.
A kickdown isn't needed and won't effect the shifting like what he is experiencing.

If the kick down linkage is stuck down , the trans will stay in first till it governor shifts .The symptoms are the same as no vacuum to the modulator .... What does that have to do with you not having one ?
If the kickdown is wired or stuck in the "engaged" position the tranny would shift 1-2-3 like normal during normal driving. I tried it several years ago thinking I would get firmer shifts and it did absolutely nothing.
If the engine speed and road speed dictates from a standing stop higher line pressures the governor, modulator, servo and VB are in control, kickdown does nothing.
The symptons are nowhere near the same and quit making the OP chase at nothing.
OK ........Except the trans is mechanical . The story of you trying to inprove yours by wiring ,just shows you don't have a clue what you are talking about ...

Wiring i.e. using bailing wire, a zip tie, etc. to manually keep the kickdown lever in the ENGAGED position.
I didn't think I would have to explain such simple things like I am talking to a 5 year old. Scratch that, a 3 year old, the 5 year would have understood.
I know your type . Can't convince based on facts ,resort to personal attacks .
If the trans is forced to stay in first gear , it will governor shift , period . Driving a hundred thousand miles without a kick down linkage is not proof of your argument. . I had the same problem once , the linkage was the problem . I also had a modulator vacuum problem ..I was trying to help OP . You were more concerned with something else ....

Aside from the personal attack & the obvious BS. Explain to me how the trans would know to shift ,if it was commanded to stay in first ...
