Front wheel lugs

96 Explorer 4WD....front wheel lugs (or studs...) are serviceable seperately from the hub. I know this because the Auto parts store gave me price for a set of five...

Now.....does the entire hub assembly need to come off to drive the lugs out?? I hope not 'cause there's 14 years of rust on the edges of the axle/hub nut, and I DREAD having to try and get that off!

No mention of this procedure in the formerly-trusty Haynes manual...

Anyone know if I can drive these out and install new ones with hub in place???

Thanks.

that works on some trucks, not sure about the EXP. you need to look behind the flange and see if there is clearance for the stud to be pushed out the back. What is back there? Normally you use a small bearing press/ c-clamp, etc to push it out. Some are not in tough enough that you may be able to drive them out with a punch and 5 pound hammer. To get the new ones in, push thru from the back, then put 3-4 washers on and the nut and torque to pull the splined stud into the hub. Make susre it seats good.

Bear in mind that hammering thusly imposes some really heavy loads on the wheel bearings. Not a good idea if it can be avoided.

Just MHO.......impish

Here's what I found....

'96's DO require hub removal...which wasn't THAT bad a procedure. It helps having a 32 mm 6 point socket for the hub nut and a 15 mm impact swivel for the hub-to-knuckle bolts, which are lock-tited in place. A few compothane hammer blows to the axle shaft end and the hub came right out (Thank GAWD!)

The spline-fit for the new lugs...this required a little "massaging" to make sure they weren't pounded in un-centered. WD-40 is your friend!. DO beware of the wheel speed sensor...it breaks very easily!!

Installation is the reverse of removal. I got to hand it to Ford....this could have been ALOT worse!
