I have a 95 king cab with a 4R70W powered by a 5.0. I replaced the original trany, in June 2010, with a '94 4R70 (junkyard edition, ) now I'm afraid I will have to replace it again! In both instances the transmission blew a leak in the same place, rear of the pan above the cross member... and by leak I mean it dumped all of the fluid before I could pull over to add fluid... 1. I have heard 94-95 is the only trany that will work in my truck. Is that true, or is there a conversion I can do to put a newer trany in. 2. Is there a defect in the 94-95 4R70 causing it to blow out in the rear of the pan?
I don't know of any defect that causes that. I have a 4R70W that has over 280,000 miles on it and is original to the truck. Was it over filled? I would think that you could run a 4R70W out of a newer truck, but don't know for sure.
I'll try to answer this as best I can, in the order they were presented.
1. '94 and '95 only: Not that I know of. The only thing I know of is that the later modular V8s used a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the 5.0/5.8 Windsors. IIRC, their may also be some electrical problems with the computer interface plugs on OBD II vehicles. I believe they used a different plug for the electronic solenoid controls on the OBD II vehicles.
2. I am not aware of any leaking problems at that point of the transmission pan, unless their was some type of undue stress placed on the pan during removal in that area. I would seriously look at the pan itself for any warpage in that area, and replace the gasket if it looks bad in that area.
Yes, you can use a later model 4r70w, but with some slight changes. I will be glad to detail if you get that far, but here is what you will need. Look for a '98 or later transmission from a F150 with 4.2 v6. Preferably 2002-2003 year model. 4r70w's behind the modular 4.6 and 5.4 motors WILL NOT WORK as the bellhousing is different. The '98 and later had a much stronger internal mechanical diode vs roller clutch among other improvements. You will need to keep your older model TCC solenoid and swap it into the newer transmission because there is a difference in ohms between the two. The solenoid will also have to be slightly modified (no big deal) because the later models have an internal wiring circuit vs. having loose wires running all around inside your tranny pan. That is ALL you need....everything else is wiring changes to your harness connector plug in the trucks harness. As I stated I can give you those connections if decide to go that route. I have '03 4r70w in my '95.
Before running this Trans, I pulled the pan and replaced the filter, checked the pan for damage, and replaced the gasket (re-installing the pan corectly and with proper torque and in the right order...) and added the proper amount of fluid. I checked the pan again today no dents or dings, gasket looks good, no reason it should have blown, unless it built up too much pressure due to a clogged vent...
Are you sure it didn't come out the rear seal? Sounds strange that it would blow out from the pan...and you said the gasket was good? BTW...I purchased my transmission from Landress Auto Wrecking in Bonifay, Florida....I see your from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and they are in the Fl. Panhandle, so freight may not be that bad. I got my 2003 90,000 mile tranny for about 300 bills with a warranty.
73fomo, that's what I'm looking at doing, so any input would be great! I think I will definitely need that info... Thanks!
No it wasn't the seal, it was def. the pan gasket, I know that it the vent on top of the trans gets clogged it will do the same thing, however, it doesn't appear to be clogged, and the bolts did not back out either... it's got me baffled, I don't understand it either...
I'm going to pick up the trans Tues. so any wiring diagrams would be useful.
What year? Let me know what the color of the plug is on the wiring connector on the right rear side. It should be white or black. I will then provide instructions on repinning and mod to tcc solenoid...it it's a new model tranny you are getting.
Subscribing...my Explorer with 2001 5.0/4R70W was just totaled and this would open up my search for a replacement DD with a blown engine/trans that I can swap mine into and not have to run the exp wiring/computer.
It was a hard hit...both doing around 45 mph. Loved this truck too, made the perfect DD for me. Worst part is now I am driving my PSD daily until either I find a different DD or I get my 79 F150 dependable.
Sucks about your trans issues. I hate fixing things more than once.
...I just got my tranns today!! It's a '98 4R70W. If you are referring to the plug with the wiring harness that goes into the transmission case, it's white... As I said in my previous post, I have a '95 4R70W existing.... Anything else you need to know? I have both transmissions out so I could find out any other info, fairly easy... Also, what kind of modification do I need to do to the TCC solenoid?
