OK after owning this truck for coming up on 11 years and 160000 mi . Her water pump has started to leak at the front seal. High 20s this morning so went out to start her and heard the belt making a noise went in to the house to get a flashlight to look things over and when I came out 10 min's later had about a 16" diameter puddle of antifreeze under my truck and a real good drip coming from the water pump. So what do you guys recommend for a replacement OEM or Advance Auto and are there any special tools needed for the replacement of the pump.
I bought new from Advance Auto, but that was before I knew about Ed and OEM Baby! Mine came with a lifetime warranty and a new down pipe. The only special tool I needed was the large thin wrench necessary to remove the fan clutch. Otherwise, it was all easy to do. Be sure to check the front cover for evidence of cavitation damage while you are in there.
You can rent the tools from Autozone or the like. You can get the pump there as well if you want. One of the guys in the convoy back from Riffraff East last year snagged one in Kentucky, heck it almost lasted to California before starting to squeal
Go with OEM from Riffraff. I have had a problem with the last 2 water pumps I got from AutoZone. First one only lasted 6k miles and the second leaked on install. But I do use their tools. Just a deposit for the tools and a full refund when returned.
If you get the tools from AutoZone get the kit for the 7.3 and the kit for a 4.9. Use the fan wench from the 7.3 kit and the pulley holder from the 4.9 kit. Pulley holder in 7.3 kit is difficult to use if you are working alone.

AA & AZ must be getting their WPs from the same company in China, me thinks.
i got my airtex online but i cant remember the wesite. everyone on here was recommending it at the time. i think the pump was like 120 bucks or something.....
When my truck leaves home it's normally 750 miles til the next resting place. No way will I trust other than OEM.The price from the dealer was very little more than parts-r-us crap
I bought Waterpump, thermostat and belt at the same time
This is totally your call, but you do not need the fan clutch wrench.
I have a shop and I don't own one, never needed it!
If you have an air hammer, get a straight punch in it and rap the nut a few times in the direction you want it to go. I have removed fan clutches from all kinds of vehicles like this. Works like a charm!
You can tighten it by hand, and when it runs, it will tighten itself more.
Rotella ELC is supposedly the same as the International spec stuff, just a different jug. I used Zerex G-05 as nobody had concentrated ELC where I am right now. Caterpillar also has a highly ranked coolant which conforms to their high standards "EC-1"...
I went with the Delo ELC when I did mine, 750,000 mile rating if checked once at 350,000 I beleive, like I am going to hit 490k on my truck anytime soon...... I got mine at the local Case/IH dealer, 16 bucks a jug for the concentrate, and 16 gallons of wally distilled water to flush system with, buck a jug I believe.
I got my Airtex from Northernautoparts about 4 years ago, paid less than $100 to the door. I would go with that or OEM, like everyone said. the NAP Airtex has been a great waterpump for my truck
