Oil Analysis Why?

Being a virgin to the world of Diesel I see a lot of people debating the oil change and frequency of said oil. I also see that people talk about having the oil analyzed.

My question is why should someone have their oil analyzed and how does one go about having it analyzed and the cost involved in having it analyzed. What should one be looking for in the oil analysis?

Thanks for the time and this site is great for the diesel virgins out there like me.

In short its like your yearly check up at the doctor. It will tell you how your motor is wearing, fuel dillution, if there is any antifreeze in your oil and give you the strength of the oil, it just lets you know if you may have a small problem lurking and will help you understand how your engine is holding up!

If you are a regular user, just follow your normal fluid and filter change intervals and you are fine.

The service is most used by fleets who are trying to wring the last mile / use out of their fleet.

It lets them make an informed decision to do things like see signs of engine / lubrication failure, or to extend the oil change interval.

But... do you take your own blood pressure once a week? Do blood work twice a year?

I get mine from Blackstone. They will send a kit for free. I think around 22 bucks to have it read.

If you are loosing coolant or something seems wierd then you do it.

If you are just curious how the motor is wearing based upon a type of oil you are using that is ok too.

I have done a few different ones but not all the time.

You might try a local CAT dealer or other major diesel truck dealer or construction equipment dealer. Ransome cat is Bensalem Pa charges $16 and has the results in 24 hours. UPS shipping is included as well!

I've had my truck since new and run mine out of curiosity mostly... I'd love to get 300k out of this 6.4 and be able to trend the metals and fuel levels over that kind of time. I'm also tracking all fuel into the truck to gauge mileage over time, so it might be a little bit ****. Never had a new vehicle though... so its kinda fun.
