I have a 79 F-250 w/dual tanks. The gas gauge works on the rear tank but has stopped working for the front tank. I have replaced the sending unit in the tank. After reading on here I did the following troubleshooting:
1) I unplugged the harness from the sending unit and went across the terminals. The gauge does not move.
2) I then went from the hot wire at the terminal to the frame. The gauge pegs, which would seem to indicate a problem with the ground wire. I checked the ground wire and I have continuity from the terminal to where it grounds on the truck body. I grounded the wire to the frame instead and got no change. I also removed the body to frame ground strap and cleaned both areas with a Dremel.
The hot wire has a pulse with the switch on, i.e. a test light blinks when connected. I assume this is correct. When I switch to that tank the gauge actually moves up to E but stops there no matter how much gas is in the tank. Thoughts?
first is your "midship" tank the long one? with the sender in the side of the tank faceing the driveshaft? if so i need to know where you got your sender as i need one
as far as the gauge goes sounds like the sender is defective or your not getting good contact
someone else on here probably knows more about this than me. one thing i would like to learn is do these senders meashure resistance or the lack thereof?
Yes, the tank is just as you describe. I bought the S/U at Advance Auto Parts. I have a roll of 18ga wire. I think I'll run the ground straight to the battery to see if that makes any difference.
