my 87 f150, 2wd has a collapsed coil on the front... and i was planning on dropping it ... but not really so soon. I've already got the parts to drop the rear, and to do a suitable match, i need to drop the front 2 inches. While i have my heart set on a set of belltech springs, it's out of my budget for a few months. here's my ponderings ...
Can you cut coils on this truck to get a desired drop??
I've cut coils before, mostly on cars that used a "typical" upper control arm/ lower control arm setup, and had decent results. I'd rather have the proper coils, but i'm looking at alternatives, so the three questions are this:
Will a cut coil work on the twin I beam suspension setup??
If so, is it best to cut from the top or the bottom? (i'm guessing the top..)
Lastly, do these springs follow the rule of 1/2 coil cut = 1 inch drop ?
i can fix the /---\ with alignment as long as it's not a crazy ... i have an alignment rack at my disposal, and i can pony up for some different "cams" ....
i've got drop beams for my 95, and i love them, but i'm not sure if i can justify the price on my 87 ... and i can live with a stiffer ride, i actually prefer it ...
As for the actual cuts, i'm looking for 2 inches of drop ... anything more than that and i wouldn't even consider this ...
I just took the coils to a shop that lowers trucks & they cut them , so im not sure about how much they cut , but it did lower it 2in and they worked fine ....
A couple of generally accepted notes on spring cutting.
The old rodders rule was for every 1 inch removed ... the spring rate increases 15%....stiffer.
Another very general rule of thumb, every full coil cut lowers approx 2".
Anything more than 2" and you may not be able to compensate for camber change.
stiffer is better, and i've run into that before ... i just forgot the amount to cut to inches lowered ratio ... and my target is to shoot for 1.5 to 2 inches ... i may cut small, test fit, and cut again to get my desired results
You could use some jeep cherokee coils. lower spring rate should lower it. I have heard about heating the coils. I don't know anybody that has done it but google probably does.

HEATING COILS IS BAD!!!!! Never do it!!!!!
As for the jeep coils, i want a heavier spring rate if at all possible, not a lighter one ...
